So I mentioned before that my buddy was hit by a car while riding his motorcycle and I was working on a new tibia for him.  Well it's done and I'm giving it to him tonight after work.
Thrown and altered, crackle slip, etched aluminum plate and bolts, oak stand.

liambesaw got a reaction from Hulk in QotW: How much do you trim?
Hmmm, I find if I'm using porcelain I end up trimming more.   Which is a pain because porcelain really does a number on my trim tools.  But with porcelain I am usually making plates and bowls where the foot actually serves a functional purpose so I don't mind throwing them a bit thicker.
Mugs no. Vases, usually no.  Pretty much anything but bowls and plates forms, no.
It's not that I don't enjoy trimming, it's fun to make a big mess and see the spaghetti fly, but in a typical day it's maybe 20 hours between when I throw and am able to get out and trim, so I have adapted to not trimming as much.  Nothing worse than trying to trim something that has dried a little too much.

Local pottery Association throwout a challenge every so often.  Latest is "Hug".
These two are drying, ready for bisque.  If they survive they will go into a wood-fired kiln at end of August.  Probably no glaze, might give them a wash with oxides, might not.
Hardest things I've made in a long time.  The standing pair are the third attempt, previous just collapsed.  They're small, as you can probably tell by the half-sized washing up sponge.

Oh awesome, I use a piece of that sticky dotted shelf liner for that. Works very well but I may give the batmate a try if I see it at the store

A cutting machine.  Paper stencils, vinyl stencils, screen print patterns, hand building patterns, the list goes on.  Love my little cutting machine.  It's the silhouette cameo 2 and I got it for 50 bucks on Craigslist.

@Callie Beller Diesel Really have missed James Butcher of late. Just finished the latest. I am now reading the latest Modesit Jr. as I really have loved all of his work. Nothing like a good read.
@liambesaw Spiders. . . . yesterday when loading the kiln, I saw a big one, with a bunch of little ones on its back! In the kiln! I did not take a second thought about firing it in the kiln! Wonder what spider carbon would do to the glazes?

If you don’t have a dodgy spider corner, is it really a studio?

There's been a coyote that hangs around outside my studio but he doesn't seem to like me very much.  Other than that it's been just me and music... And LOTS and LOTS of spiders.

I have been working 60 hours a week at my real job, so haven't done a lot.  I did just open a glaze firing this last weekend though with some great stuff inside.  For some reason I've been throwing bottles and putting handles on them.

I use a milk cap on the top and apply gentle pressure while trimming tall forms.  More than one way to skin a cat
my favorite way is to throw forms that don't need to be trimmed heh

Haha!  We lived in a small airstream borrowed from my grandparents for a few years growing up, and I ended up buying a manufactured home and land when I became an adult.  It's a lot more fun when you embrace it

Not on my kitchen table yet, will be about 6 months, but we make our own miso paste here and for the first time we are using jars that I made to do it!

You can put oatmeal in milk or water overnight in the fridge and then just microwave til it's warm.  It soaks up the water overnight and works well.  Kinda like soaking beans but not as involved

Cutie bear we get one every spring as well, but he tortures my huskies as he passes through the greenbelt.  He hasn't been curious enough to enter my studio yet though, thankfully, as I'm usually inside of it while he's passing a few feet away.  No food in there, so nothing he's interested in

That's a good idea, the handles were a total after thought, I had pulled a load of mug handles and didn't want any go to waste so I plopped them on here.  I can't think of any functional use of these, was just for fun.  My wife has been using one as a bud vase.  I made a few syrup bottles similar to this but with a spout, the handles on those look a little better attached

Hi folks, I have been working on some prototypes for pouring chalices. I have sent this image to the customer to see if I am heading in a direction he would accept. There are a variety of shapes, with a continued them of stem and bowl. I am more in favor of the deeper narrower bowls with closer to Golden Mean proportions, but tough to do exactly. All have two pouring spouts on opposites sides. Hoping to get a reply back soon.

    best,

My second attempt at a self-draining soap dish works! Big thanks to Pres for supplying this suggestion:
Having a wall and a lip as two sort-of separate elements allowed me to cut a channel through the wall, but still have enough clay on the lip to pull and shape a spout. Now it allows the water to slide off, but not the soap!
