The mug was a mistake. I lifted the clay too quickly while pinching too hard. I ended up with ridges and a slightly uneven rim. My first impulse was to throw it into the recycle bucket but there was something about it that I liked. I trimmed off the unevenness at the rim and threw a ripply bowl to match. The next day I added some intricate slip trailing and I can't tell you how glad I am that I kept them after all. These are two of my favorite things I've ever made.

Slight hourglass shaped mug with an argyle design I first tried on a kleenex box cover. The original design had dots all over everything but the diamonds and by about halfway through I was really regretting it. This represents a compromise. I still put dots, but I put less and less as they reached the rim of the mug. I think this version is more striking and I wasn't cross-eyed when I finished. Win-win!

Wheel thrown mug with a hand drawn design of a city skyline at sunrise. I can't even express how much I love slip trailing.

This is my second deep wide spoon rest intended for larger utensils like ladles. My sister requested something like this and I made the first one with her in mind. This one is a little more my style. It has cutouts and just a touch of slip trailing because I would die if I ever had to go without texture.

I'm a very new beginner to wheel throwing. These two mugs were an attempt to throw the same shape twice with 1 lb. of clay. I was pretty happy with how they turned out! One has a sunrise scene slip trailed on and the other has a full day scene. They will be treated with iron oxide and glazed in different colors to reflect the time of day.

I had drawn up this slip trailing design, then wanted to try it out on different shapes of mug to see which one I like best. The good news is, I really like the design. The bad news is, I still couldn't tell you which one I like better! The branch goes up from the bottom on one side of the handle and down from the top on the other side so no matter where you look at the mug you get a different view every time.

I had fun with this one. I was in a really good mood while throwing it, then I added some stripes in the slip on the surface. When I was done with that I stroked my finger up from the bottom several times in different places to create a dented diagonal stripe in the piece, then turned the wheel back on to straighten out the rim. Something this fun needed a really elaborate handle, so I hand formed a deep curvy handle that turns into a little extra foot on the bottom of the mug.

My second wheel thrown sponge holder. Slip trail decoration with a mountain scene and crescent moon. The mountains will be rubbed with iron oxide and the rest will be glazed a lovely layered blue that breaks over the slip trailing.

My very first cream pitcher. Thrown in B-Mix clay from Laguna and decorated with slip trailing and stamped with one of my handmade flower stamps. I plan to glaze it in a creamy peach that will show white over the leaves and dots.

My first attempt at sgraffito. I think the clay was a little dry because it didn't carve as easily as I would like.

One of my first wheel thrown latte cups. I made it in Laguna Hawaiian Red and decorated it with slip trailing ... the inside is also painted with white slip so I can use a vibrant color and have it show up true.

  18. I love it. My bunny Foxy loved bananas more than anything. She especially seemed to enjoy the skin, she would rip it off and eat it before digging into the banana.
  19. Working madly on glazing two loads of bisque. I'm starting to really regret all the plans I had for iron oxide because it's a pain to work with!!

I'm glazing them today, going to try an oxide rub to show detail. One is going to be black-and-white spotted for sure. :)

  20. Love, love, love the surface decoration. I wish I could pick these up and feel all the texture!
