  1. I am interested in silkscreening over a colored glaze and was wondering what I should use as the medium. I was thinking engobe, but not sure if that would work. Also, would I have to do a third firing or could I do it all in the second firing?

  3. Morning! I am looking to try a third-firing technique for added layers and details. Should I use an underglaze like amaco velvet OR an Engobe. I know they are very similar but what would be the difference in this situation? Thanks!
  4. Looking for a recipe similar to this one, from an article by Norm Stuart. I downloaded the files but they didn't contain the recipe for this image. I've been searching far and wide for textured glazes for nearly a year. I have tested marilee's lava, pinnel, John's beads, sprayed on engobe, etc. If anyone has a technique or recipe that would yield the texture of this photo, PLEASE share.   7. I am working on figurative ceramic sculptures and would like to bisque them (08) since they are very fragile. Then I want to coat them so the effect is multiple thick layers of colored slips/engobe? I am using stoneware b clay with grog.     I don't make many teapots, but I had the idea for this teapot with a hollow wave cut out of the body. It was an experiment, and it's not perfect but I still really like this piece. Wheel thrown and hand built with applied engobe and underglaze, sgraffito and hand painted waves. Fired to ^6 electric.

    This is my favorite piece I have made to date. I sold it about a year ago but haven't made another one yet. It's wheel thrown with applied colored engobes. It's hand carved and textured with pulled handles and commercial glazes. Fired to ^6 electric.

    Three wheel thrown pieces made with Speckled Buff clay. The interiors are then painted with white stoneware slip and the outside is carved with grass and flowers. Then underglaze is applied to the grass and white engobe to the flowers so the colors will show true.

    This was my first attempt at "production" (making three of the same size and shape). There is some variation but they turned out clearly a matching set! I was quite pleased. The inside was painted with a creamy yellow engobe before bisque firing, and the outside was decorated with the same engobe and coated with clear before the final firing. I wanted to see if the engobe would end up different colors but it didn't change a bit.

    I don't even want to talk about how long this took to make ... more a work of art than a production piece. But I enjoyed making it so much and this is the first piece I've ever made that came out even better than I imagined. I love everything about it (this never happens to me). I used white slip on the inside of the bowl and white engobe on the flowers so the colors would show true. It worked very well, but some of the little speckles showed through anyway, which I found completely charming.

    I really love the way the pattern on this planter came out. This is wheel thrown with applied engobe, sgraffito geometric pattern. Fired to ^6 electric with commercial glazes.

    This vase is about 6 square. I threw it then carved grooves in the top and bottom. The grooved sections get a couple coats of black engobe because I like the way the glaze looks over the black. The middle is black engobe with paper branches then blue engobe then the paper is peeled off. It has commercial glazes and was fired to cone 6 in my electric kiln. I tried to get fancy with the picture.

    This is a jar I threw in one piece, incised the lid then trimmed them apart. The whole piece is covered in various engobes and underglazes, carved and fired in an electric kiln.

    another view of my nautical teapot. I threw the spout and handle and pieced them together. I got some cracks in the seams of the bottom cut out so I keep this one for decoration.

    Working on this little hand bell. It's thrown and painted with blue engobe then carved. It has a bit of high temp wire shoved into the high point of the bell which I will hang the ringer from.
