  5. Finally was able to fire the new kiln yesterday.   Would not fire...just gave  a strange error message.  The problem was the  Genesis controller was wired incorrectly.  With help from Steve at Bartlett...changed 2 wires and it fired right up.

Thanks, Min.   I feel much more comfortable.  It was actually good to experience this issue and have to fix it.  Felt more in control of the controller:D

  6. I am thrilled that I will have a worker bee coming next week to assist me with bringing my backlogged inventory current. I have forced myself stop making anything more until I get this done and all my remaining smalls are coded  for the web & stored in labeled drawers for easy access. Then I can get on with making some samples for a local shop keeper who is interested in a particular line.

Update to the update.  Yesterday relentless rain resulted in water in the basement  and under the kiln.....not too much though.  We caught it just in time.  Best news is we found the source of the leak.  Patched a little after we sucked up the water...  Looks dry this morning.    I am relieved!!!!

My husband just finished putting the plastic under the sandbags and bags of soil and other stuff in front of the door... A little overkill, but it should stay dry.  Water is already puddling in front of the studio.

Thank you.  Luckily, we are in central NC.   The rain is beginning for our area now off and on.  Tonight and tomorrow it is supposed to be the worst of it.  We have sandbagged the restoration studio which also holds my slab roller and clay.  The studio is at a lower level than the house and floods if we get too much rain and 5" to 12" of rain is too much.  Test firing will have  to wait until I am sure that the power won't go out and the basement doesn't take on water.

Send all your good thoughts to the Seagrove potters...looks like they may get more bad weather than we'll get outside of Winston-Salem.

:D  I like to just look at it....but it's gotta get dirty sometime.  Test firing tomorrow.

Sewer stack?  Now that would be not good.

Thank you.  Luckily, we are inland, but they are saying we could get up to 20 inches in rain.  Maybe it won't be as bad as they say.  In any event, we are ready.

Added a picture of the kiln.

Glad to hear that you were not hurt too badly.  Hope you got some good peaches to munch on while you sit with your leg up and a little ice on the ankle.

  16. Well, it's got nuthin to do with ceramics, but  a big black bear just helped himself to the suet cakes hanging from my car port roof. He made a crushed wire mess of my pricey squirrel proof double cake suet hanger. I've been hanging suet for 8 years w/o being visited by a big fuzzy thief.  Guess I won't be putting that out anymore. Did I mention he was big? (And beautiful-a treat to see, truth be told).

The bear stories are artistic inspiration.  We now have some fodder for our creative sides.  I have been working on a bear shape for my animal figures.

Up on the porch is too close!!!  We occasionally have bears wander down....but it makes the news.  And the wildlife people are very good about getting the word out to not disturb the bears as they will wander back home.   Hopefully, your bear will wander back on the ridge.  You could put the feed on the ground....most of our birds will eat the seed the deer have spilled from the feeders.

That is great.  Did you get a picture of him or her?  Are there many bear in your area or do they just wander in because of disappearing habitat.?

We put the feeders on shepherd hooks so only the youngest and lightest squirrel can climb up to the feeders; they also cannot steal the whole suet cake.  But the deer empty the feeders by tipping them up and letting seed fall into their mouths....it really is funny to see.

Thank you both.  Not sure when the replacement kiln will be sent....presumably after they receive the one I sent back.  This time, I will remove all of the wrap on the truck before I sign off on it.  Both UPS Freight and Clay King have been helpful.

Lee, thank you.  The banner is a picture of one of the last items I made before taking  a break and deciding that I needed my own space and studio.  I named it Winter Puddle.

Denice -  That garage space is sacred isn't it.  That's why I am in the basement.  We shall see about getting it into the basement.  I bought the smaller one...less weight...but it is still 200 lbs.  So we will be enlisting more help and taIking it apart to get it downstairs.

Roberta - Ordered a Olympic Medallion 1823.  It is small but large enough for my work.....When I outgrow it......I envision it being my bisque and test kiln.

Thank you all for the support!!!!

Thank you for the tip, I will definitely add leveling to the checklist.  It is going into the basement....and the floor is not very level in spots.

Who knows, maybe you can open a kiln museum when you collect enough kilns.

Never saw that on Am Pickers either.  Yes, I will probably graduate.  I look forward to having to take over our restoration studio for my ceramics studio.....already moved the slab roller in there and some tool storage.

  24. Finally, going to take the plunge and buy my first kiln.  I am feeling a little scared....I have some  experience firing someone else's kiln...but it has been a few years.

My space in the basement is all wired, got a great vent area....the house had an old oil furnace removed 30- 30 years ago, but the chimney still has the vent and the opening is close to where the kiln is going.

Glad to hear about how you are moving ahead.   I am looking forward to that feeling more confident.  I used to help with the loading and unloading and occasionally the firing of the electric kilns at the community art school.  But I was following directions.  It is going to be different to have to fire on my own.  Lots to learn.

I have been reading them.  Will be reaching out when I run my first test run.  I am becoming more excited than scared.  Need to get going on my glazes in prep.  Used to help make them at a local community art school.  Think I will look for 1 good recipe and go from there.
