LogicalHue
After a day of carving yesterday my thumb is still hurting and I feel like I need to start exploring some options! I've seen a lot of photos of tools that have obviously been wrapped up to form a cushion to make them more comfortable to hold, but I can never really tell what's going on. Wondering if any of you have a material/method that works for you? I went ahead and attached a photo of the tool I use for carving.
Magnolia Mud Research
Have used to improve the "holding" of carving tools: wrap tool with: masking tape cotton cord 1/8 inch foam sheet copper wire elastic bandage rubber bands black friction tape leather shoe lacing remove the "business end" of the carving tool and attach to a custom made handle that fits my hands. GEP
Pipe insulation and rubber bands. I have not had any hand pain since. See a photo on my blog: http://www.goodelephant.com/blog/sometimes-pottery-hurts-part-
Tarantara
Vet Wrap provides a nice grip for me. I keep it on hand for the animals anyway.
rakukuku
my hand therapist talks about a product you can coat your tools with so they are like those "soft " pens you sometimes see. No clue what it is but wish i had some. rakuku

LeeU
I reached the quota for "likes". (What's up with that, anyway? Seems to me I should be able to show that I like (means appreciate the value of the content and/or the spirit of the post) as many posts as I choose. Anyway....thank you Neil. I "like" your instant info and the convenience of the link and I am on my way to Home Depot now!!! This will definitely help with the arthritis in the hand. Pres
I approach the tool problem from a different angle. You know those really soft work gloves with the grip buttons on them, yep. Works real well for me. At the same time, I use a little over the counter arthritis cream on my hands before putting on the glove. best, Pres
LogicalHue
Thanks everyone for these ideas! Something like Vet Wrap / Bandage had occurred to me when I posted this but I never know if I'm just making things up that wouldn't really work. I'm pretty excited about the pipe insulation idea though and I'll see what I can find my next trip to the hardware store!

Mark C.
When my fingers lock up (stick straight out or bent) which is more often these days I cannot hold a tool no matter whats wrapped on it so I do not wrap them. This seems to happen after glaze day which is the most brutal day on hands
Marcia Selsor
My hand therapist gave me some fan tools to slide over tools, pencils, etc. That was in 1982 after carpal tunnel surgery on both hands. Neil I love that Plastic dip link. Thanks for posting that. And I have likes left for today. Marcia
