Heidi1
Used my new Shimpo banding wheel yesterday and saw that the blue enamel color of the wheel came off onto the clay. Every time I wipe a little harder with a damp paper towel more of the color comes off. Is this normal? Is it okay? Can I do anything to stop this or should I return it? Thank you for any advise! bciskepottery
That is not usual and you should return it.
GiselleNo5
I agree. ^^ Shimpo products are normally very high quality, my dad has two of these banding wheels and that has never happened. Definitely contact the company.

Ginny C
Mine does the same thing...I've had it probably 7 years, and it still does it a bit, when I rub it with a damp sponge. But it no longer does it enough to get into the clay. I just live with it! Several years ago I wrote here about wishing to be able to use it ALSO as a non-turning surface at that height. I still think Shimpo should make it with a locking mechanism. Does someone from Shimpo read these queries and respond? Ginny C
MatthewV
I use a lump of clay as a locking mechanism.
Heidi1
Ginny C did you scrape off the blue enamel off the clay back then? My clay is very light and very noticeable. But would it hurt the shelf, kiln or piece by the enamel?
oldlady
no. whatever it might do, the amount is so tiny that it is not worth considering. how can a speck of dry paint hurt your kiln?
algebraist
Mine is about 15 years old, and if I rub it with a wet cloth, some blue paint still comes off. Oh well, it doesn't seem to harm anything, and I don't lose any sleep over it.
Bioman
Mine is less than a year old, but not doing this.
JohnnyK
I made my own and used a plywood wheel head with a Diamond Varathane clear coat and haven't had any problems with it.
