Millkeabe
I’m an extreme novice. I’ve had a few classes over the years and have been obsessed with pottery for a long time. As I now live in the middle of nowhere I’ve decided to just dive in and get a wheel. I was looking at second hand wheels and two options came up a Lockerbie motorised kick wheel(model k) and a clay boss(almost brand new condition). I’d like something that really lasts and I can grow into. What would all you skilled and knowledgable people recommend. If it changes anything, they’re both around the same price. neilestrick
@Millkeabe If you haven't used a kick wheel, and don't totally love kick wheels, get the electric. What's the price?
Millkeabe
Ahhh I thought because it’s motorised I wouldn’t need to use the kick wheel. Is that not the case? (Attached an image) They’re both $
GEP
If you weren’t planning to use the kickwheel function anyways, get the more space-efficient Clay Boss. Space is a valuable commodity in most pottery studios.
Min
Clay Boss will be quieter too.
Mark C.
clay boss electric (although I really do not like that brand). Kick wheels are just to big and work to slow
neilestrick
The motor on the kick wheel does not have much control. It's just a full speed motor pushing against the fly wheel. Not a lot of good reasons to get a kick wheel unless you really love them. Plus that Lockerbie is a nightmare to move.
Stephen
A brand new clay boss is around $650 shipped so don't overpay. we have a couple of shimpo whisperers now but I used a clay boss for about 6 months and it was fine. But I don't throw really big pots either.
Pres
I have thrown on a Lockerbie, and for a kick wheel it is fine, however, folks that learned on a belt/gear driven direct wheel are happier than using the rhythms of a kick wheel. The lockerbie as most well built kick wheels is a tank, will last forever. At the same time if you are looking to throw larger than 15# I would use the Clay Boss. best, Pres
