synj00
I've got 32 soft bricks and want to build a raku kiln! I don't really want to mess with the ceramic fiber and trash can method. I want to explore the updraft / downdraft and up and over methods. I know I need another pallet of bricks to explore more configurations but does anyone think it's possible to build something with this few bricks? I have a few shelves and a few refractory hard bricks. http://instagram.com/p/t6MChSLUP2/
Biglou13
You can get medium duty hard bricks for just over a buck...
Marcia Selsor
you could build the base for a fiber kiln but not much beyond that. Marcia
High Bridge Pottery
Could you have the set up in the picture and make a fiber dome lid?
Marcia Selsor
you need no less than 2 layers for the base..for raku, more for a higher firing. Then 2 courses for the burner level, that leaves the chamber. and the top. Marcia
Mark C.
You need some more brick 32 is a good start. Fiber is such a great ease with a raku kiln.Consider it's use. Mark
oldlady
what are you imagining? flow of flames through the kiln? for raku? up and over draft? for raku?? you only need to heat the stuff to a temperature about cone 06 i think. then the fun begins, not while it is merely heating up. the actual firing is just a step to get to the varied ways of finishing the pots. Yeah I was imagining that. So with raku you cannot get any different effects by the heat taking different paths? So a square box with a chimney and an input for heat is the only real requirement? I've read a lot and there are just so many ways that its done. I was thinking about making a small woodfire kiln but I dont think soft brick is the right way to go with that as it would smoke the bricks and probably destroy them. So then I thought about getting a LP torch and using what I had to get something small going in a hurry.
