Adding Larger Table To Slab Roller

going to try to post these pictures of my slab roller and what i want to do.  i need table space and the tiny surface of the slab roller is just too small.  they sell an addition but it is $$$$$ too much.  my friendly, wonderful carpenter can do something with it but i wonder if anyone has a suggestion for a support.  i have a beautiful piece of 3/4 birch plywood to use.

the problem is that it needs to be out of the way when i need the kiln.  so, what would you suggest?

Why not a piano hinge so you can raise the extendo table up when needing to use the kiln. The table looks like it would be far enough away from the kiln as to not be a hazard. You can put a leg, on a hinge, attached to the underneath side of the extendo table. When you drop the extendo table down, the leg will automatically swing into position to support the table.

both good ideas.  i want to try to avoid a split if possible.  want to make one big top without a seam.  i need to pull the kiln out from the wall to fire it.  marcia suggests wheels on the table which would be good if there were room to roll it out of the way.  not much room in this studio.

would one leg at the end work?  i picture a long top fitting right up to the rollers and using the clip system already on the top.  when i need to use the kiln, i can unclip the top and tip it up out of the way so it is resting on its end and would look like a big letter L.

my very excellent carpenter has come and finished a wonderful new tabletop for my slab roller.  going to try to post a picture or two here to show you how great it is.  what a difference an additional 3+ feet and 6 inches of extra width make.  used it today and could not even figure out what to do next, it will take a bit of getting used to.

we used the ideas you suggested, a simple piano hinge and one wide plywood leg that falls into place.  it has been cut to provide a handle for moving it aside while using the kiln which rolls out from the corner.  a piece of 2x3 keeps the leg straight.  the top is a single piece of 9 ply 3/4 inch birch plywood which had apparently been in a very well made kitchen next to a refrigerator.  it happened to be painted the exact color of the factory top.  we used the hardware provided on the original tiny top, a sliding latch.  thank you all for your suggestions, hope you think we did a good job with your ideas. :)

thanks, terry, it is not heavy because the big, open square becomes a handle so i can use both hands and swing it out before standing it up out of the way.  undo the clips, swing it out and it is gone.   fortunately, i only use the kiln about 3 times a year so it is not so bad.  it was wonderful to use the tall stool and do some fiddly stuff yesterday.

you might notice that i have straightened up the messy area at the end and found another closet frame for drywall shelves.  ( tossed the rollerskates .................)

hahahahahahaha, bruce.  not my choice.  the shenandoah potters guild is getting ready for their annual Mayfest sale.  we make lots of some pot design and sell them to collectors on a weekend in may.  this year's design is a doozy.  someone selected 112 as the clay we all will use.  all the pots should be the same (HA!) since we have a template, a weight, measurement and instructions.  this year we are adding a lion head sprig.  can't wait to see all the varieties there will be.
