Mark C.
Well due to a trucking issue my annual materials and clay shipment came in about 3 weeks late-right before my sales season. Moving this 11 tons last minute into my shed and studio has put a hurt on my body. I usually take time and get this done over time not 5 days as I just finished yesterday. This shed holds about 11 tons of clay as its 8 boxes deep. I stacked them 8-9 boxes high in the back. What I learned is order really early or do it mid winter .Now that its what I call an inconvenient holiday (thanksgiving) which has always been a pottery making /sales issue time I'm doing my usual kiln load and fire today. This years Holiday is a bit late so my big out of state show is next weekend. I gave up selling on this weekend years ago when I stopped doing studio sales. Someday I will just relax and enjoy some food.I always wonder what this would be like. Today its mix glazes and get ready for the Black Friday glaze day here when bisque is unloaded. I can see the light in the end of the tunnel on Dec 25th.Until then its make/glaze /sell pots for folks to enjoy giving to each other. This year s my 35th year of having a x-mas booth in my small town in a shopping center. Cavy Fire Studios
HOLY FREAKING CLAY. ... ...you totally just threw my back out. How...in the CRAP...did you unload all that?! Please tell me you had help! I'd teleport you to my family's place so you could stuff yourself up pretty nicely if I could! *sigh* I know how it is to suffer for other people's incompetence. Try not to have a stroke and have some wine.
Mark C.
I have two pallets loaded in my truck by forklift (43 boes per pallet-as I remove 6 boxes per pallet to fit into truck shell) then drive it to my studio where I unload it into shed straight from tailgate-no help never had help-I have done this once a year since I can recall. This is my whole years supply of Daves Porcelain-some minot amounts of other clays -Babu Porcelain-1/2 and 1/2-HBCA for salt pots and some 550 porcealin as well as a pallet of glaze materials which I store closer to shop. High Bridge Pottery
Nice supplies, those boxes look fancy. How do you know how much clay/glaze you need for the year? How much does that cost Also what is a snafu
Mark C.
( How do you know how much clay/glaze you need for the year? How much does that cost Also what is a snafu) 9-!0 tons of clay is what I go thru every year now. Its my 40th year in business and I know this from many years of working. This year I was down to my last ton last week which is lower than I like to get. Next year I hope to slow down a bit so maybe a few less tons.In terms of glaze I keep enough materials on hand to make my glaze needs. Every now and agin I run low mid year and buy from my local suppliers whatever is needed.-I tend to do 30 large car kiln loads and about 20-22 small kilns loads per year so I know from that what to keep on hand. I'm basiclly a small materials wherehouse. I always buy in bulk and tend to hoard up materials-for example I just bought a 50 # bag of rutile even though I have a 50# one unopened.I know I'll be getting into that one next year and want a reliable source of tested material.I have always done it this way so I have some control on tested materials. as Far a s snafu-its situation normal all (well you will have to use your imagination on the last part as this is a family place.)
