Paul Plumber
I have a bathroom sink that is made of soft ceramic. The glazed surface area near the drain is cracked and ugly. I am thinking of sanding off the old glaze in an area about 3" in radius around the sink hole and re apply low temperature glaze using a blow torch. Would that work? I don't know much about ceramic at all. Please comment.
Bill Kielb
Very, very unlikely. Lowfire glazes melt about 2000 degrees. Fired on enameled porcelain is usually a mix of Frits and fires in the range of 1400 degrees. That’s probably the tip temperature of a propane torch, plus if cast iron - you need to heat the whole vessel. My thought is very very unlikely, removing to a restore shop possible but I am guessing replacement probably more economical. Callie Beller Diesel
I would also expect the spot use of a blow torch to cause enough thermal discrepancy through the piece to crack it entirely. +1 for what Bill said. Either have it reglazed professionally or replace it. Rae Reich and Chilly
