Using fire bricks and wire as makeshift stilts

Recommended Posts

Hello you wonderful people!

I have spent far too much money on kiln stilts and have been trying to find an alternative method to firing my fully glazed pieces. I built this little setup using 2” thick fire brick and Kemper high temp wire. Since my pieces are hollow and have holes on both ends, I just strung them through with the wire. But now I’m wondering if having this amount of fire brick in the kiln will mess up the rest of the load or cause any unwanted effects. I’m new to this, so I’m still terrified of making a stupid mistake and ruining all the pieces I’ve worked so hard on.
Thanks so much in advance!!!

Thanks for the reply! Do you have any insight as to whether using this in the kiln could affect temperature or anything?

It won't affect the temperature any more than any sort of other bead tree

Other thought would be to make a tree with some heavier wire. Next time you replace element, save the ends and unwind/flaten so that you have some solid straight wire. Use this in one of the bricks standing up, and hang the beads on the tree.
