AndreaB
Hi everyone, In SA the only wheels you can get are without bat pins. I suck at making chucks and also placing a bat with clay pieces. Has anyone altered a wheel head to accommodate bat pins?

Marko
Not me, but I have thought about it because I want to make 6" round bats. I am going to buy a custom one in the near future, if the manufacturer will do it.
neilestrick
Here's another topic on the matter: http://community.ceramicartsdaily.org/topic/7614-how-to-drill-for-bat-pins/?hl=%2Bbat+%2Bpins This link discusses drilling bats, not the wheel head. Bats need a 3/8" hole, but the wheel head needs a 1/4" hole. Typical bat pins in the USA are 1/4-20 threads. The head of the pin is larger, hence the 3/8" hole in the bat. You'll need to figure out what size pin is standard where you live. The simplest way to drill the wheel head is to center a bat that has the holes (10" on center is standard for bats in the US) and mark the wheel head. Then find the exact center of each mark and verify that the centers are exactly the correct distance apart. Then center punch the marks before you start to drill, or else the drill bit will drift. I like to start with a small bit and work up to the final size in a couple of steps. It makes it easier to drill and keep on center.

AndreaB
Thank you so much. Here I was thinking it would be a real problem. I'll have to get my hubby onto it over the holidays. By the way Happy holidays to all. May it be peaceful and travel safe
oldlady
andrea, have him look under the wheelhead so he avoids any big metal support ribs.
