Drilling Bat Holes Onto A Wheel

Recommended Posts

This link discusses drilling bats, not the wheel head. Bats need a 3/8" hole, but the wheel head needs a 1/4" hole. Typical bat pins in the USA are 1/4-20 threads. The head of the pin is larger, hence the 3/8" hole in the bat. You'll need to figure out what size pin is standard where you live.

The simplest way to drill the wheel head is to center a bat that has the holes (10" on center is standard for bats in the US) and mark the wheel head. Then find the exact center of each mark and verify that the centers are exactly the correct distance apart. Then center punch the marks before you start to drill, or else the drill bit will drift. I like to start with a small bit and work up to the final size in a couple of steps. It makes it easier to drill and keep on center.
