Very sad news, I will not be able to take ceramics next semester...it looks like my hobby will be put on hold for quite some time, as we currently do not have the finances to set up the rest of the necessary equipment in our current space.

$20 per item??? That does not make any sense. Lump it together until you have like 5 for $20 or something. The rates here just to use the facilities are insane.
-
I know, I think it's ridiculous. There is no way the whole firing even costs $20!
-
Did a horse-hair firing tonight. Got great results with the sulfuric acid!

Haha, I would not know! The professor gave it to us. From her horse. I forgot to use the lions mane we had left over too (yes real lion, we have a teaching zoo on campus).
-
Good color!

Wow, I never heard of a lion petting zoo! I guess the crocodile petting zoo didn't work out!

Student Ceramics Sale is tomorrow, putting a few of my best pots up for sale. Great way to see others work, professors are very encouraging.

Yes! I kept my favorites, the strawberry pot in my gallery was one, as well as a few mugs. My stuff got so much more even-walled and light towards the end of the semester, you can really see the difference in just 3 months. Excited to go again next semester!

Sale is going great so far. Sold over 3/4 of my pieces. I think they are running it today too, so I will pick the left overs up next week.

Decided to take up sewing and knitting to occupy me until the new ceramics semester in January...

Never can you have too many hobbies.
-
Any glaze books on what each material is and used for? IE: copper is for oranges, yellows, blues and reacts like x,y,z in these conditions....
-
Knitting not coming along well, sewing is fun.

Found a medium-small high fire Paragon kiln never used for less than $300... Now I just need to convince my husband where to get $300 from!

Hmmm, sell his golf clubs....
-
I paid $175.00 for broken down, A82B Paragon. $300 is a steal. Bricks falling apart and I need new elements. I dannae if she can take any more, Captain! You can't mix matter and anti-matter cold! I need a scotch, Scotty. Aye Captain.

Today I get to see my marbled planters! Really excited for the result...

Oh no! Do you have pictures?

Yeah I posted in the forum, something weird with the clear glaze and the black engobe I used.

Hmm. *grumpy face* Bummer!

Less than a week left to create for this semester! Afterwards, glazing and firing until the beginning of December.... I will have to nab a few bags of clay so I can handbuild during the 4 week break between the next course.
-
me "I am not going to ceramics tonight, I have too much to do" also me "Well I have to at least pick up my finished glazeware" also me *spends 2 hours in studio glazing and taking notes*

I use the really small stuff as little prep bowls or sauce dishes in the kitchen. And the smallish stuff is great for eating yogurt or ice cream, you know, the stuff you don't eat in huge amounts like soup or salad.

*refills tiny bowl a hundred times with soup because she can't decide how much she wants

HAHAHAHAHA
I made some teacups that held only 2-3 oz. *sip* *refill* *sip* *refill* *sip* *refill*

So is there a realistic weight of clay to pull certain height cylinders and does it depend on the skill more than the clay? I swear some clays are so difficult to pull up and others want to reach for the sky.

I haven't done the cylinders. But I know I used to make a 6 oz. mug with one pound of clay and now I make a 10-12 oz mug with one pound of clay! LOL And yes it does depend which kind of clay I'm using.
-
Lol @min and @diesel. I have seen that, and in 3 pulls? No. But I did get 9" after 5 pulls Which is...not even close. I have been setting myself to do 6" tall cylinders with 1.5lb~ of clay and 3.5" wide for a solid 10-12oz mug. I actually trim a lot off before the form is finished (removing the uneven lip and trimming near the foot). It was a rocky (lol) start but eventually I kind of made a realization with how the clay was reacting in my hands and what to do next. My forms ar...

We call it legs-some clay has more than others.
For me a 1# ball of porcelain is a 12-14 once mug-skill does come in there as we'll as legs

Had Monday off work and was visiting parents up north. Instead of coming straight home yesterday I went straight to the studio to see the new glaze kiln! I am so pleased with how some of the work came out!

Great. Congratulations! We need pictures though (hint hint)

I have uploaded some! (:

Nice!!! Great way to come back after three years!

I just found out that all of our work is fired reduction by default. I also found out that only Soldate 60 and Porcelain are fired to cone 10, everything else is a cone 5 clay but fired to cone 6....I am still confused. I must bother the professor more with the how and why.

If you are in the typical group studio you are going to have two firing temps - 6 & 10 and one bisque temp of 06 or 04. This is set in stone so your instructor stays sane. When you get your own kiln you get to do whatever you want. With time you will learn the pros and cons of firing at different temperatures but in a school setting you just have to set limits.

My nephew took a pottery class at college and he was so upset that he didn't get to use whatever clay and glaze he wanted. I said, listen to the teacher. He doesn't want his kiln or other peoples' work ruined.
-
Yeah, no outside glazes or clay that makes sense. Our bisque is 06, and we have separate carts for the normal reduction ^6 stuff, and a cart that must have notes on your work if you want to do raku, saggar, ^10, wood fire etc.... would suck of any of those got mixed together! xD

Just got back from a three day trip in Death Valley! Professor canceled class last week so I had to be without clay for 4 days! Looking forward to getting back to the studio tonight...

It was 120 on Saturday (:

It usually cools down in late November-March and the mountains get snow during storms. It is tricky in the desert, go in the summer and you get massive heat waves, go in the fall/winter the roads wash out from storms and it freezes at night. You just have to pick your weekends, the heat was not that bad because it is so dry there and most of the attractions you drive to and can do as little or as much walking around as you want. Spring is usually the best after it rains a little, there are wi...

Oh dear I could not handle 120. Spring sounds great.

High Bridge that's what I thought, I can't find an FAQ that mentions problems uploading or a time limit. We will see!
