I had thought of applying to show five cups in the Cup: The Intimate Object show at the Charlie Cummings gallery in the fall. I was a bit intimidated by the resume requirement. Do they only accept artists with formal training and a degree? I was curious if anybody knows.

I hope I am not irritating any of the lovely people who have art degrees when I say that. It's just that either your work is of a high enough caliber for a show, or it's not. I have seen plenty of low quality work made by art school graduates so it really should rest on the work itself more than anything else, should it not?

It isn't that they wanted information about how the work was created, I was just a little stumped by a resume requirement. I'm entirely self-taught. Thank you to everyone for the response. As I mentioned to Tom, I want to be 100% fine with hearing NO and not take it personally. Denice: that bothers me. What does a degree have to do with the quality or kind of art you make.

When you love your greenware but dislike your glazed ware. #confused

I have had a far more difficult time getting my glazes right than any other aspect of ceramics. I rarely have issues of any kind with the making process, if I'm going to have a problem it's always with the glazing. It can be really discouraging and the journey to success is different for everyone. It's such a disappointment when time after time you open the kiln and the results you see don't match the one you were going for.

Thinking about starting to stockpile for a studio show in six months.
-
Last year the last two months before the show were a desperate scramble and I DO NOT want to do that again. It was extremely stressful for my household and just about killed me. I don't think I slept more than four hours/night for the month before. I suppose I could make a plan to make X number of pieces each week that are put aside for the show. And if it does not sell at the show it will sell online, as Roberta said.

I have done the show two years in a row. The second year I had 3x as many pieces and earned 3x as much. There was a huge focus on mugs last year, nearly everybody who bought anything bought a mug, occasionally they would buy something else too. Very few large pieces sold but I still like to have them because they draw people in. Those are my thoughts anyway.

Think I finally convinced myself to write a book on clay formulation and remedies for common clay issues. Should not take me more than five years.

Started a short (1 month only) pottery class last night. Touched a wheel for the first time in 8 years. Given my past experiences I think I was a trooper. Made a pot-thing sort of then ran out of time. Hand built a couple more. It was very mellow. Long drive there/back. To my surprise we'll be given KEYS TO THE STUDIO and can come in and basically do 'lab' work unsupervised any time there isn't another class on. This is a fully equipped college pottery room and I'm delight...

My wife saw a the table covered with bowls, each with a little slice of lemon all wrapped up in cling film and realised yes he's lost it...

This year, let's see if I can find the right cycle of work and stay in it. It's all about balance and consistency. Easy.

Threw some test cylinders from my high translucency formula this morning: much higher plasticity than any stoneware I have tried.
