  1. Glaze fire IN! As usual on the strength of one good test I have done something new with a whole kiln load because apparently I'm insane. I think it's going to be fine, though. I'm 98% sure.

  2. I had thought of applying to show five cups in the Cup: The Intimate Object show at the Charlie Cummings gallery in the fall. I was a bit intimidated by the resume requirement. Do they only accept artists with formal training and a degree? I was curious if anybody knows.

I hope I am not irritating any of the lovely people who have art degrees when I say that. It's just that either your work is of a high enough caliber for a show, or it's not. I have seen plenty of low quality work made by art school graduates so it really should rest on the work itself more than anything else, should it not?

It isn't that they wanted information about how the work was created, I was just a little stumped by a resume requirement. I'm entirely self-taught. Thank you to everyone for the response. As I mentioned to Tom, I want to be 100% fine with hearing NO and not take it personally. Denice: that bothers me. What does a degree have to do with the quality or kind of art you make.

I tend to stick to about a half-dozen glazes, I don't think that's too many. How many do you have?

I have had a far more difficult time getting my glazes right than any other aspect of ceramics. I rarely have issues of any kind with the making process, if I'm going to have a problem it's always with the glazing. It can be really discouraging and the journey to success is different for everyone. It's such a disappointment when time after time you open the kiln and the results you see don't match the one you were going for. :(

  8. Thinking about starting to stockpile for a studio show in six months.

Last year the last two months before the show were a desperate scramble and I DO NOT want to do that again. It was extremely stressful for my household and just about killed me. I don't think I slept more than four hours/night for the month before. I suppose I could make a plan to make X number of pieces each week that are put aside for the show. And if it does not sell at the show it will sell online, as Roberta said.

I have done the show two years in a row. The second year I had 3x as many pieces and earned 3x as much. There was a huge focus on mugs last year, nearly everybody who bought anything bought a mug, occasionally they would buy something else too. Very few large pieces sold but I still like to have them because they draw people in. Those are my thoughts anyway.

Is it too soon to start? Looking for veterans' input. I only do an in-person show once per year, I do the rest of my selling online and perhaps once a month a customer will come by the studio to purchase something.

  11. Think I finally convinced myself to write a book on clay formulation and remedies for common clay issues. Should not take me more than five years.

  12. Started a short (1 month only) pottery class last night. Touched a wheel for the first time in 8 years. Given my past experiences I think I was a trooper. Made a pot-thing sort of then ran out of time. Hand built a couple more. It was very mellow. Long drive there/back. To my surprise we'll be given KEYS TO THE STUDIO and can come in and basically do 'lab' work unsupervised any time there isn't another class on. This is a fully equipped college pottery room and I'm delight...

  13. I donated some pots to a raffle and there were several murmurs of excitement from friends. One even came up and bought a bowl that was't in the raffle - my first ever actual sale.

  14. My wife saw a the table covered with bowls, each with a little slice of lemon all wrapped up in cling film and realised yes he's lost it...

Hm. Maybe I should research "SIMPLE bullet journal". :) Since I tend to make things complicated anyway simple is GOOD. Let me know if you try it, Joseph, I'm curious how they work. I definitely could use something to be more organized. Too much going on in my mind at any given moment.

Tom: I should have my husband make one for me, that's literally what he does at his job. He can be my unpaid consultant. XD I like this idea.

Joseph: I have thought of keeping a bullet journal. It seems like a project though and I already have so many going ..... Probably making it too complicated in my own head ... that's never happened before ...

  18. Threw some test cylinders from my high translucency formula this morning: much higher plasticity than any stoneware I have tried.

  19. just tried out the Sherrill Do-All trim tool, love it! cuts so cleanly, thanks S.Dean for your help there : )

  20. Dang!! Thanks to everyone helping me get this done...especially Ron and the magic of the url! I now have an avatar I can live with.

  21. Not happy-I have emailed three different admins omultiple times over a month's time and NOT ONE has even responded-this is about that "dead man" profile I can't get rid of-can't upload any image, and they are the right size. Phooey.

  22. Sooooo what's wrong with Gallery? Will only let me upload one image at a time. -.-

It's Speckled Buff from Laguna, which has been formulated to mimic naturally occurring clay deposits found in the East.
