  1. After a summer spent in a kind of funk, I'm back madly working. I find that if my mind is not clear, I cannot work. So frustrating! But it's clear now and I'm excited and happy to be in the studio again. I feel refreshed.

You and I, both. Lets make some great pots. Deal?

      It's a deal!! :) LET'S DO THIS!!

  2. Back from a trip with my family. I'm staring at a huge pile of suitcases and my hands are literally aching to throw because I had a million amazing ideas while I was away!

Oh no, Grype, I went to reply and accidentally deleted your comment! I wasn't offended by it. I was going to say, I sell them as fast as I can make them but I've only made nine in the past year. I'm not against raising the price.

Hah. No worries. I have done the same thing as well.

  3. Back to my white clay this week, which means a switch to slip trailing instead of carving! Oh so many many dots ...

I've gotten pretty good about cleaning as I go but before I switch I check everything. Still sometimes I get a smear or two. Oh well. :) I've been practicing throwing off the hump with little shot glasses, then slip decorating them. I'm about to upload them if you want to see. They're still just green.

Looking good. I just videod myself throwing off the hump today. It's been a while since I have done it. It really helps to review. Your pots look great.

      GiselleNo5

I was throwing off the hump AND throwing on my friend's raised wheel. I want to try it at home and see if it goes better.

  4. Before I got sick, I'd been waiting for 40 lbs of recycled B-Mix kin a pillowcase to dry out enough to wedge. It took FOREVER. I wasn't even worried about having to stay out of the studio for two weeks. Well, I went in to wedge it last night ... it was hard as a rock and I have to start over. :( :( :(

Good to hear that you are feeling better. Not so good that your clay isn't cooperating :)

Haha! Thank you, I've been madly glazing and shipping tocatch up. When I carved into the huge mass, it was still leathery about 1/2" under the surface, so I have hopes that if I wrap it in soaked towels for a few days that will reconstitute the outside and I can start wedging.

    4. Callie Beller Diesel

      Callie Beller Diesel

You might be able to cut and slam at this point to even things out. I find the pillowcase method doesn't dry as evenly as I'd like it to, but it does have some other convenient points.

  5. Bisque load this week, glaze load next week. I've been trying some new designs so I'm very excited for this round of firing.

Aaaand you lost all sympathy. ;) That sounds so awesome. My brother-in-law does surf fishing and ever since I had his fresh perch tacos I have never felt the same about store bought fish ever again.

Despite the cold nights, our fig tree has come out in full leaf. :)

  7. Built glaze storage shelves and assembled a third wheeled rack yesterday. Muahahaha. STORAGE FOR DAYS!!

  8. Busily photographing 75 items so I can list them online. It's hard to resist the deep pull to make more new work especially now that I can handle the finished pieces and see each thing I want to change. I'll post more works-in-progress and also pictures of my finished pieces today and tomorrow.

I use Picasa 3 which is a free download from Google. I really like it. All I use is lightness, shadow, and occasionally straighten or crop. I did about 50 photos in 15 minutes last night.

That being said I DID do wedding photography years ago which involved viewing and editing 1,000-2,000 photos per event so anything compared to THAT is a piece of cake.

I love doing the photos, HATE listing the items. What is your Etsy shop, Rebekah? I'm thinking I've visited before.

  9. Can I have a day off from everything? I want to just stay in my PJs and lounge around and do nothing useful for a WHOLE DAY.

I will keep an eye on it though. So far this last one is the only one that has had us coughing, the other two were just runny nose and sore throat. No fevers or anything serious. Just intensely annoying.

Joel I woke up this morning and realized I glazed twenty things in one color, was done with that color and design .... except I forgot *one* pie plate. Fortunately I haven't fired yet.

  14. Glaze fire in the kiln with all my new glaze tests. We shall see if I mixed them correctly since Laguna refuses to give specific directions for mixing.

  15. Glaze fire IN! As usual on the strength of one good test I have done something new with a whole kiln load because apparently I'm insane. I think it's going to be fine, though. I'm 98% sure.

I have a few photos of the orange/peach poppies up in my gallery if anybody wants to see. I am still not sold on it so I'm going to run some tests with each color interior paired with poppies in peach, orange/peach, and orange so I can compare them all. I have a feeling that some will go better together than others.

  16. Glaze firing with my dad this weekend. We'll open tomorrow morning since we used his big kiln. First time ever that I've slept the night we were glaze firing, I feel pretty confident.

Also I have discovered something. I don't have trouble sleeping when the kiln is firing .... I have trouble sleeping when the kiln is about to be opened. I got about 3 hours of sleep on Saturday night because I was so excited, got up at 6:30 am, rushed over, and caught my dad eating breakfast. LOL

    4. Marko

      Marko

I'm sorry about your dad's hard work getting wrecked. That's really sad, but he'll be ok; he has a wonderful daughter to cheer him on, not guilt. Go Dad! :)

I'm glad you had results you wanted. Relax, Rethink, Remake and fire away.

  17. Glaze kiln cooling, to unload tomorrow, all new designs. So excited! Next weekend is my Open Studio Tour.

  18. Glaze or bisque firing almost every day this week. Big push to finish EVERYTHING in time for my Open Studio which starts Saturday. :)

  19. I had thought of applying to show five cups in the Cup: The Intimate Object show at the Charlie Cummings gallery in the fall. I was a bit intimidated by the resume requirement. Do they only accept artists with formal training and a degree? I was curious if anybody knows.

I think galleries use the information when they cary an artist as part of their permanent gallery artists. This makes it easier to answer questions from customers. I think it is pretty routine. I recently had a gallery "not bother" with gallery sheets, and then I got a panicked email from a gallery sales person wanting information about how I made a particular piece. I prefer galleries that keep that type of info in their office. That's is why they get paid 50% if their sales pers...

    3. GiselleNo5

      GiselleNo5

It isn't that they wanted information about how the work was created, I was just a little stumped by a resume requirement. I'm entirely self-taught. Thank you to everyone for the response. As I mentioned to Tom, I want to be 100% fine with hearing NO and not take it personally. Denice: that bothers me. What does a degree have to do with the quality or kind of art you make.

    4. GiselleNo5

      GiselleNo5

I hope I am not irritating any of the lovely people who have art degrees when I say that. It's just that either your work is of a high enough caliber for a show, or it's not. I have seen plenty of low quality work made by art school graduates so it really should rest on the work itself more than anything else, should it not?

  20. I have two weeks till Open Studio and I think I'm getting sick! :(:( I have 26 mugs and several other pieces wrapped in plastic, waiting to be handled and carved, as well as 40+ other pieces that are dry and ready to be fired.

I laughed at the popping up at people thing. Shelves do look bigger in the photos. Interesting that people handled middle more. Either way not too much to worry about just improve and learn like u said. I bet others will have better comments who actually do shows unlike me. I was just coming from a consumer stand point. I like ur pots a lot was surprised u didn't sell much. But I guess it happens.

    3. GiselleNo5

      GiselleNo5

Oh, no, I really value it. I had a couple people send private messages and I have gotten completely unique perspectives from every single person. Also I can't exactly ask my customers what they think of my display, they're hardly going to give an honest critique! LOL People would come up and I would have this moment to decide whether I stood up and startled them or stayed sitting down and watched them creepily from between the shelves. I felt like I was hunting wabbits.

    4. GiselleNo5

      GiselleNo5

Thank you, by the way. This kiln load had barely any "whoops" to it. A couple things had to be ground off but no bubbling, nothing to be refired for the first time ever. Shocking. ;)

  22. I now have enough dry bisque to fill the small kiln 2 1/2 times. So I think I'm going to power through and make enough bisque to fill the BIG ONE, which always gives me 4-5 glaze loads in the little one. Getting stocked up for my October studio show.

BUT I SAID I WOULDN'T DO THIS ANYMORE. LOL Last year I did this all year and couldn't handle it all the glazing that followed. Now I'm not even scared.

Glaze firing. One single 1/8" thick, 2" diameter cookie exploded at the top and infiltrated every single shelf.

    3. GiselleNo5

      GiselleNo5

Duncan teacher plus kiln, 3 items did NOT have shards inside. I went to go unload (it's my dad's kiln) and he had ground off every shard so I could refire. All I have to do us touch up.

    4. GiselleNo5

      GiselleNo5

He knew I was planning to smash them and he was so sad that it was the whole kiln. I don't even know how long it took him. I have a very nice father.

  24. I spent my happy Saturday carving, slip casting, and doing mishima on some little stacking prep bowls. Not enough hours in the day for me, so I ended up putting half my things back into their bins to stay damp for another day.
