Finally got the mold slump mold made and a platter from it finished. It worked well and I can finally get to make more of these platters.

I am just forming a slab rolled from M340 and placing it inside a plastic tray/platter coated in Pam. As the clay starts to dry the cracks form on the rim, even if I cover the clay with plastic I still get cracks. The clay is still moist enough that I can remove it and wedge it. Just made a couple of slump molds with #1 Pottery Plaster and will try with this in a few day to see if it will dry more even.

I have a plastic platter that I try to make slab patter with M340 clay. I have a problem with the rim always cracking. I use Pam as a release agent and still have issues. If I make a plaster mold will this solve the Cracking issue with a more even drying? What plaster would you recommend? I would have to first make a mould of the platter ( Hump mold )and then build the slump mold so I do not get the shrinkage problem with the clay.

Needed a change of pace and had lots of pieces ready for my wife to paint so I made this, to bad the board cracked but it adds character.

The only thing I still have to figure out is how to keep more of the trimming off the floor. Built a shield for the wheel that helps but still does not get it all. I see in the above picture the use of a towel draped into the wheel pan, will try that as well. -

After 4 years of trimming I purchased a Griffin Gripp and love it. There are things I do not use it for but to me it is worth it. The tabs on the bottom can be finicky to get in the right place but it should be tight on the wheel head and not on a bat. Look closely at the tab settings they are small to read and might need a magnifying glass. Make sure they are all set exactly the same, don't give up on it yet and make it fit the wheel head correctly. Only issue I have had is sometimes when I run the holders all the way in one of the holder jam or get out of line.- 77 replies

I have spent more time surfing the internet and the forums. I have been watching videos on throwing and have learned lots of new tricks, the last one I watched was how to throw a domed lid. Will have to try that on the new Skutt wheel I purchased and brought home across the border 2 days before it was shut down. It sure is a pleasure to have a quality wheel to work with instead of the powered kick wheel, I find my work has improved . Life here has not changed much for us except we do not go into town to shop as often or go out for our weekly dinner night. ( not necessarily a bad thing, I get bored of their menu ). Most of our sales get mailed out and has not changed much.

Usually try to get locally, sometimes from auto shops. Used a hockey puck for a new drive wheel on an Estrin powerd Kick wheel. Met a person the other day visiting here that had made my Kiln elements and claimed he worked on Building the Estrin wheels for the Vancouver school board.

Reading the above posts I dont fee so bad for 2.5 hr drive to Greenbarn. I will order by mail for smaller items at time. Have a New Skutt wheel due to arrive from South Carolina to Washington for pickup on Monday... Hard to wait, like Xmas. Been working on under powerd wheels for awhile. Min , where are you located? Must be close to my old neighbourhood before I moved to Merritt Went on the outskirts of Seatle the other day took from 90 and 405 it was a crawl to I-5 and all the way to Cabellas, 20 min drive took 2.5 hour in the rain with a Western Star 13sp standard pulling horses.

My first kiln was a Skutt 1227 made in 1958, replaced the elements and a couple of bricks and worked fine. Only reason I replaced it was 2 years ago was that I found a 1 year old 3" brick 1227 Skut , an Olympic kiln and a bunch of other stuff too cheap to say no.

We give pottery to friends in Arizona when we winter there as well as donate for prizes to the Canada high school rodeo finals and some other horse related events.

I saw a post you had in January that you purchased a Pacifica wheel in 1972. I just purchased a Pacifica wheel probably about the same age. The wheel is a GT500, contacted Laguna and they have never heard of a gt500.
I am trying to find out what hp the motor is and was wondering if you happen to know.

ron, just saw this, my internet connection has been down.
i have not heard of it either. where are you seeing the number? i have a 400 and they also offered an 800. could you be reading 5 for 8? i bought it from the inventor who sold the business to laguna years later.
if it is on the motor, i would have to crawl under the table to see any numbers. where should i look? i can use a mirror to see what might be visible underneath. just looked with a mirror. it is very hard to see the label and it is placed where it is almost impossible to read.
i think i remember it was a half horse.

Well just blew up the controller , yes it is a gt500. now I with I kept my Estrin wheel.
