New Shimpo Banding Wheel Rusting

Recommended Posts

I've wanted a nice banding wheel for a long time, but at a hundred bucks for the larger Shimpo, it took me awhile to go for it.  After 3 weeks of light use, the top (cast iron, I guess?) is starting to rust. I'm worried that a year from now it's going to be pitted and pocked with rust!  Is this "normal" ???

only if the paint is missing?

Cast machinery will rust unless its painted or oiled or waxed-oil gets into the surface microscopically a tad and prevent rust

good light oil like sewing machine or general l;ight oil works best -a little goes a long ways.

i just went out to look at it closely.  there are several spots in the grooves that are rusty looking, a few scratches and some tiny spots as well.  they  would not total more than an inch long in a groove if added together.  i use it very heavily, it holds wire refrigerator shelves full of pots for glaze spraying and then gets washed off, it holds a metal and foam

oops. power just went off, cannot see to type. rainy dark day.

You could strip it down to metal and force a patina..........

Wd 40. (Water displacement). Ike pres said

I've cleaned then put a coat of wax on on trouble metals, both polymer and carnauba that kept the iron oxide at bay.

Or leave it alone....

Off topic. Anyone know how to get a giant shimpo banding wheel..... Bigger than the one available in US?

One would think/hope/expect that after just a few weeks of light use, the banding wheel should not be rusting.  Especially one from Shimpo (and, yes, I own a Shimpo banding wheel and a Shimpo Whisper wheel).  You may want to take a picture of the wheel and send it to Shimpo . . . perhaps they would replace it for you.

Bruce. I felt a whisper at a store recently. WOW that thing is amazing. Its the porsche to my pacer (harbor frieght wheel)It's the most precision wheel I've had opportunity to touch. What a luxury !!! I'm jealous, envious and happy you own one. If there exists a better wheel I don't want to know about it.

Plus one on calling shimpo on it. Or where you bought it. They ain't cheap. (But its on my list).

I've grown accustomed to the proletariat tools I've been taught on. Having worked professionally in other art fields..... I tend to over look the tools..... overlook the trees for the forest. I'll take a cosmetically flawed shimpo anyday.

Lou:

I asked Shimpo about the big banding wheel: our rep there he said the huge one seen in the Shiko Kansaki youtube video is from  "Japan Company called HAYASHIDA CO."

I want one too !!! LMK if you find a source ! I was hoping to have someone check ebay Japan for me.  Shipping is going to expensive I imagine !

Or know some crafty, engineering wise?

I tried the big shimpo with a. 25 pound bumper plate. Think 45 pound weight plate size, but rubber coated. Stuck to shimpo with clay balls, On top of that a a bat stuck to the bumper plate with balls of glaze. Basically a shimpo banding wheel with an additional 25pounds spinning mass. I could almost get a small pull out of it. I got some coil built pieces looking like They were wheel thrown.

I tried to figure out a bearing system.... To make my own But mechanical engineering stuff is not my bag......
