oldlady
manual kiln with sitter bisque firing right now, started 7:30 PM. normally i turn up one knob per hour, meaning it takes 9 hours to get to the top knob on high. that would mean staying up til 3:30. a little late, 1:00 AM more reasonable. average, even. so, what if i turn up each knob every 45 minutes? will it affect anything badly? pots are dry, no question of that. silly worry or valid concern? neil, where are you? Babs
After your kiln reaches 600dCelcius, approx. 1112F depending on the type of ware, I have sometimes, well often hit the fast button! ie put it on full. I generally try to let it rise slowly till that temp is over then increase it but as I say when pushed I do the above. Do you know how fast your kiln rises on full? Marcia Selsor
I usually turn kiln manual kilns every 2 hours, low, med, high, 7:30, 9:30 and 11:30. I shut the lid about 1/2 hour after turning on medium.Sleep well. Marcia

oldlady
thank you, all. i usually find all firings, even the ones using my controller kiln, last 14 hours. marcia, i use a mirror til the last minute, find sometimes there is still steam coming out after the last knob goes to high. no temperature on this kiln so i will check before i put the lid down and the plug in. Babs
Well Old Lady, did you get to bed "early" and did your pots survive the souped up firing? Nice to get feedback
oldlady
you are right, but it was just a bisque firing, no way to tell if all the pots are happy. the firing went off at 3:30 and i woke up at 3:45 and went out to check. walking out in my slippers with a tiny flashlight was interesting. did not see any red eyes looking at me. the armadillo and the opossum must have been back in bed. took all pots out yesterday afternoon. look good. one mold for a dragon has a few cracks but it was the very last of my raku clay and thinner than i like. probably will work well. packing the car and have totally run out of energy. hope to sleep well, finish packing and drive off to home tomorrow. will be out of touch for a week or so. make those guys behave themselves, babs. who knows what kind of mischief they can get into. Mark C.
My answer is not to drive fast but slow and safe Babs I will try and behave and soon I will have an app on my phone that will fire my toaster to cone 10 and let me know up to the minute results from wherever i,m at. The phone app I,m really excited about is the one that will wrap ,box and ship the pots to whomever I say all on my phone.
Babs
Mark I thought you'd be delighted to control your kilns from 30 fathoms down, or at least see that the Gas has run out etc. You could up your diving hours. It's just what you want to be thinking of on these excursions
