flowerdry
I have been experimenting with feather raku. I believe I have achieved a fairly unique look. I would really appreciate any thoughts from the group. Has anyone seen anything exactly like this? Any critique?
Dick White
That's very nicely done. Feathers are not as common as horsehair, but it's not a new technique. The issue is that feathers, particularly smaller feathers, are not as easy to apply as long horsehairs without burning yourself. The secret is needle-nose pliers. Some years ago I did some with both feathers and horsehair. I titled the series HorseFeathers.
Chris Campbell
Your results are lovely, especially the one with the lilac rim ... but, I have seen similar pieces. That should not stop you from having fun with the process and seeing what else you can get however ... most of the work we make can be found in the past! oldlady
without the explanation that it was feather raku, i would have thought i was looking at a path to a beach. lovely.
Marcia Selsor
Nicely done. Dick, I use the term horse feathers, too. It reminds me of the Marx brothers for some reason. I used less feathers when I use to do workshops on horse hair and feathers. In fact, I am teaching that this May in Scotland as part of an intense Alternative firing processes with the Scottish Potters Association. We're doing Horse hair and feather, obvara, foil saggar and ceramic saggar. We'll have 4-5 raku kilns for the weekend out on the shore of Dunoon. Flower dry, I find duck feathers are really good for a nice rich black. Marcia
PRankin
I've never seen anything exactly like that. Its a beautiful effect and the style and shape of your pots are terrific. I'm looking forward to seeing more. Don't get burned.
Kellykopp
Your work is nice, I like it, but I especially like the way you included the creeping phlox (spelling?) in the first photo, really sets the piece off nicely.
