jodihorsford
I purchased a pint jar of tourmaline (amaco potters choice) and applied with a brush. I did apply 3-4 what I thought were heavy coats- very sloppy. When it came out of the kiln, it is a deep forest green with absolutely NO float whatsoever. I work out of a community studio and do not have control of the actual glazing but everything is glazed to cone 5-6. Any thoughts? Since no float appearance, did I still not apply it heavy enough or is it a temp issue with the kiln?
Babs
Was the glaze thoroughly stirred? The Rutile may have settled to the bottom.
Min
I would make up some tall test tiles and try a thicker glaze application, leaving room for it to run. Also ask for the test pieces to go on a shelf with a witness cone so you know they are getting fired to the right cone.
neilestrick
Different thickness, different clay, different kiln, different firing schedule, different cooling rate, etc..... Lot of variables that can make a glaze come out differently than the tile in the catalog. Keep testing.
grayfree
Hi I have used tourmaline a number of times and it is a thick opaque glaze. Nice color but no varigation if that is what you are looking for. It comes out matt like and thick looking. I use small amounts in combo with other glazes. Never by it self. Don't think you did anything wrong that is just the glaze.
