Soonyi
I have a recipe that calls for OM4 but I'm running low. However, I have surplus C&C, Tennessee and Tile ball clays. I heard that ball clays' properties are very similar to one another. Is it ok to substitute one for another?
Hulk
Hi Soonyi! You might compare the composition(s) of the clays in question, e.g. OM #4 Ball Clay (digitalfire.com)Tennessee #9 Ball Clay (digitalfire.com) ...there are several "Tennessee" ball clays...CC China Clay (digitalfire.com) adjust as necessary, then test! neilestrick
For most glazes you probably won't see any difference if you do a direct swap. For clay bodies, C&C is much nicer IMO.
Min
@Soonyi, what are you making, casting slip, claybody, glaze...? 3 hours ago, Soonyi said: Tile ball clays Tile 6 Kaolin? Welcome to the forum.
oldlady
i changed from OM4 to C&C years ago when i switched clays from 112 to white stoneware. OM4 is a dirty looking color and i wanted the white of C&C.

Alumina and silica are just about identical in those ball clays. Less fluxes in the C&C but for glaze I really doubt you would notice it.
