MFP
Someone has asked me to make 4x3 inch pots for making candles. I have reservations about the clay body being able to handle the heat without cracking. I use a cone 6 toothy porcelain, a cone 10 white stoneware without grog, and a cone 6 stoneware with grog. Any suggestions on the best choice.
Callie Beller Diesel
Heat from burning candles goes almost exclusively upwards, and not outwards. I personally have had no issue, but I don’t know if there’s any liability issues in the US to look into.
oldlady
i have a potter friend who worked with candles years ago and she said the only problem she saw is the heat that happens when the wick burns down totally. if there is no spacing between the bottom of the candle and the bottom of the container, that heat can burn whatever the container is resting on. so, sounds like you would want to raise the bottom somehow to prevent damaging someone's furniture. MFP
Thank you very much. That makes sense.
MFP
Thank you for the info. The customer is going to be making the pots into candles, not me. I suspect they are to be gifts. I have advised her that they need to have a foot as advised in the previous post.
Babs
Depending on the wax, some shapes can bring a cracking of the wax on cooling.
MFP
Thank you Babs. The candle part is her problem. I don't think I am going to do this-- as crazy as people are any more, it just seems too risky
