When I lived in Utah there was an Air Force surplus store that had all sorts of great stuff. I used to get odds and ends there like rope and random metal stuff, even picked up a couple of nice filing cabinets for next to nothing. Every state probably has a surplus shop or auction of some sort, just need to Google it for your area. American Science and Surplus in Chicago has a lot of good stuff, too. Not ceramics, but a lot of other things that might be handy to have in the studio.
