MFP
Digital fire says Groelleg is an appropriate substitute for china clay in glaze recipes. I have not found any china clay for sale. Opinions please?
Callie Beller Diesel
Digitalfire is quite reliable. I'm given to understand from a couple of ex pat friends that china clay is used as a substitute for EPK, so it might depend on which direction you're trying to substitute, and where the recipe originated. neilestrick
I've always heard 'China Clay' as a generic term for grolleg. In most glazes, however, just about any kaolin will work. No need to spend money on grolleg.
Magnolia Mud Research
My experience is that China clay is a synonym for generic kaolin.
MFP
Thank you both! When I was ordering materials I got a small amount of groelleg.
Rae Reich
From what I can recall, in glazes, EPK, China Clay and kaolin are fairly synonymous. Grolleg is (or was) used mostly for purity of whiteness in porcelain clay bodies.
liambesaw
I always thought "china clay" was British for kaolin
MFP
After looking at 1000 glaze recipes on glazy......yes and no....some are very specific about the exact English china clay required. Way too fussy for me. I am with Tony Hansen....keep it workable!
