After two hours of practice throwing this morning: I need to post in the "Help, I cannot center," and the "Help, I cannot pull walls, and the " Why in the he** did I buy a wheel anyway" threads.

So is there a realistic weight of clay to pull certain height cylinders and does it depend on the skill more than the clay? I swear some clays are so difficult to pull up and others want to reach for the sky.

Lol @min and @diesel. I have seen that, and in 3 pulls? No. But I did get 9" after 5 pulls Which is...not even close. I have been setting myself to do 6" tall cylinders with 1.5lb~ of clay and 3.5" wide for a solid 10-12oz mug. I actually trim a lot off before the form is finished (removing the uneven lip and trimming near the foot). It was a rocky (lol) start but eventually I kind of made a realization with how the clay was reacting in my hands and what to do next. My forms ar...

After owning my first wheel for two weeks: I have gone through nearly 100lbs of clay centering and pulling simple forms. I actually pulled a ten pound cylinder today: my first attempt with that much clay. I have also been using my own custom porcleain and stoneware bodies: which I like alot better. (bias intended)

I just found out that all of our work is fired reduction by default. I also found out that only Soldate 60 and Porcelain are fired to cone 10, everything else is a cone 5 clay but fired to cone 6....I am still confused. I must bother the professor more with the how and why.

I mean, I get the firing in reduction part because we have two massive gas kilns plus tons of bright red and other glazes... but the firing cone 5 clays to cone 6? Why? Why not just get cone 6 clays or have all cone 10 clays? Obviously they are not concerned about costs and ware and tear due to low tuition and dirt cheap clay (lol). *head hurts*

It usually cools down in late November-March and the mountains get snow during storms. It is tricky in the desert, go in the summer and you get massive heat waves, go in the fall/winter the roads wash out from storms and it freezes at night. You just have to pick your weekends, the heat was not that bad because it is so dry there and most of the attractions you drive to and can do as little or as much walking around as you want. Spring is usually the best after it rains a little, there are wi...
