Mug Posted February 18, 2014 Report Share Posted February 18, 2014 Hello everyone I have a home made pottery wheel with a dc motor, and it has a 1" shaft for the wheel head. I was looking to replace the wheel head with the Lockerbie at around $70 or spend the extra for the Brent at $185. 185 would be getting closer to purchasing a good used wheel. I have a 1" drill rod shaft mounted to a 1" trailer axle housing with tappered bearings and it runs true. I have a wood top now, and it is a little off. Brents used to connected with a roll pin-not sure the connection on the lockerie. This is an important point. As far as brents I have a bunch of them and they all work great. Lockerbies I threw on long ago as a kick wheel. Long past that stage. If you are asking kick over power than I say power over kick. Kick wheels are large and heavy-moving is them tough. I was looking to replace the wheel head on my home made electric wheel. It has a digital controller for the DC motor, and a variable speed foot controller. I am happy with what I have put together, but the wheel head is not good. I have some misc. machine equipment ,and an Industrial design background. Pinning the wheel head should be easy enough, but I will check into how they attach, thanks Mark. Hi Patrick...$70 seems fair for a wheel head to me if it will work well. I'm looking to become a proffessional potter, and I need to be more productive. 185$ is pushing the envelope to where spending 300 or a little more on a used wheel may make more sence. There are so many people who buy $2,000 wheels and they set in a corner collecting dust. I see them on Craigs list often. You have decide on what you think is a fair price, and wait some times for a good deal. Around here most people ask $300 to 400 for a good potters wheel. It was a second hand wheel that I picked up which had a head that was broken on the ends. They have a tapered shaft type of connection which may work great for you. Mug Posted February 21, 2014 Author Report Share Posted February 21, 2014 Thank you to everyone. I called Laguna about the Lockerbie 13" wheel head. It is 1" straight bored hole (no tapper) and attaches with a set screw. Lockerbie ships from the California location. At the last minute I found a really good deal, and ended up ordering a flat top Brent wheel head 14" also 1" straight with a set screw. It should be here next week!
