Large Pitcher Lips

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I am looking for some feedback about how people create large pitcher lips.  I have seen some that are attached and others that appear to be cut from the rim.  However whenever i have tried cutting It never looks right or the lip is too thick.  Maybe i just need more practice but im hoping that someone might have some pictures or links to videos that show how to create nice big pouring lips.  I attached a picture of a pitcher that I really like and trying to recreate with little success.

Thanks for any feedback,

I have done something like the image shown.

The lips are thrown as part of the bottle by taking they "neck" higher and flaring the edge out.  then Flatten, and cut the "negative space" away.  In the above image, the upper part of the handle looks to be the remains of the left side of the neck/rim mirrored on the right.

I would say that handle is completely attached, not the remains of the lip. But it's shaped perfectly to match the lip on the right.

After you cut away the excess lip, you'll have to work the remaining spout to thin out the edge. It can't be a squared off cut edge. Scrape it down and taper it to a thin, rounded edge. If you're using a smooth clay body, you can sponge the heck out of it to achieve this. If it's a grogged body then you'll have to work more with scrapers and smooth it out with rubber or metal ribs, as sponging will just make the surface rough.

I shape and pull most of my pitcher spouts, but most are more traditional, not as exaggerated as  in your example. However, many years ago I was into that type of spout and found that pulling a vase rim to make a spout, then cutting with a wire in a hacksaw frame worked pretty well to get similar to what you were looking at.

best,
