LeeU
At what temperature is it generally OK to shut off the vent (goes to the outside) when cooling down? (L&L E-Z Fire Program for ^6 with minimal glaze on the ware and using a controlled cooldown).
bciskepottery
I turn off the vent (L&L Easy Fire, too) when I start to unload. Or, around 100 to 125F.
MatthewV
As one could argue that the vent is already an optional* feature... just about anytime really. The fan makes noise so I turn it off when I get to the studio. This is a short time after the firing is done. (800-1000°C) *it is rather essential. Roberta12
I turn mine off when the firing is complete. That way it cools a little slower. r.
neilestrick
If the vent motor is mounted away from the kiln (L&L Vent-Sure, Envirovent II, etc.), the vent can be turned off at any time. If it's an older vent that has the motor mounted underneath the kiln, it should not be turned off until the kiln gets below 1400F.
Denice
Like Roberta I turn mine off when the firing is done so it won't cool so fast. Denice
LeeU
New Envirovent II so I take it that shutting it off after getting down to 300 or less is fine. Thanks all.
irenepots
Hi everyone. I glaze to cone 6 and am wondering when I should turn off my downdraft vent. Is controlled or slower cooling necessary for glazes other than matte? The manufacturer info I believe says that leaving the vent on when firing is done is fine because it's a controlled cool. I generally do a 12 or 15 minute hold also and wonder if I should turn the vent off when that starts? Or leave it on till the kiln is cool? What do you do? neilestrick
Just leave it on. It won't affect things much, especially if you're doing a controlled cool.
irenepots
What if if I'm not doing a controlled cool?
neilestrick
What if if I'm not doing a controlled cool? The only time it may affect things negatively is if you're doing really big pots. I was once making some 25 pound pieces that were getting cooling cracks. Turning off the fan at 1500 solved the problem. But for regular pots it shouldn't be an issue at all. There will be a slight decrease in total cooling time, but not enough to hurt anything.
irenepots
Neil, I'm about 23 pounds away from throwing 25 pound pots so that won't be a problem. Thanks for your well timed response. The kiln and I are done for the night after a marathon glazing session. Goodnight.
