Functional Translucent Porcelain

Recommended Posts

Iin going to try my hand at making some thin porcelain translucent drinking vessels

Most of the thin pieces I've seen are not glazed

As long as piece is well vitrified I'm questioning the need for glaze?

Will clear glaze make piece less translucent?

Will un vitrified porcelain pieces stain with use? Eg tea, red wine .....?

There is a good article in this month's Ceramics Monthly by Bryan Hopkins regarding making low fire translucent porcelain vessels. Neat picture of test firing showing which ones survived the firing (electric) and which ones collapsed. All part of the learning curve.

I use a Cone 6 translucent porcelain, (Frost). I usually glaze with a matt white with no effect on the translucency.  This fall I made a simple cup mold and made very thin cups. I glazed some light blue outside and copper green inside. All retained their translucency, but a small problem with the inside color affecting the outside color because the light goes through.
