Wax finishes for high-fired works

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I'm curious if anyone has any experience using waxes or any other materials as finishes on fired stoneware. I'd like to get a translucent, satin finish on top of my fired works. I tried applying clear paste wax to an unglazed work, but it seemed to just absorb all of the wax and had basically the same finish as the claybody without wax. (This was on Cone 6 fired Tucker's CCSS clay). I'm a newbie to ceramics, so I'm curious if there's other materials out there that would work well to get a waxy finish.

Hi Nicky!

Am recalling similar question posed here...

non-yellowing wax or polish for smoked pottery - Studio Operations and Making Work - Ceramic Arts Daily Community

In class (at the local JC), we used a paste furniture wax to put some shine on pit fired ware that had been thoroughly burnished. The burnishing allows the wax to build up some.
