High fire glaze on low fire bisque

Recommended Posts

@michelle page, if you have lowfire clay and want to use mid range glazes on them chances are it's not going to work. If you fire the lowfire clay to cone 5/6 it's very high odds that the clay will bloat and melt causing damage to your kiln. If you fire a midfire glaze to lowfire temps it's going to be very underfired and immature and won't look like it's supposed to or be as durable as it should be. For the most part you want to use lowfire glazes on lowfire clay and midrange glazes on midrange clay. Always best to fire some test tiles or test pots before committing "real" pots to a new glaze or technique.

No, you're likely to just get a puddle of clay, the height of the original thickness, and spread almost all the way across the shelf.

Ask me how I know?

I tried it, but with the safety net of a scrap piece of clay to catch the mess.
