michelle page
I want to use Pottery Choice glaze that requires being fire at cone 5-6, but the clay I have is low fire. I usually bisque fire at 04, glaze at 06 as I have always just used low fire glazes, Can I do this without ruining the results? Thank you!
Sorcery
Depends on the clay really, but 96%, No. Sorce
Bill Kielb
Interesting, how sturdy are your bisque wares cone 5-6 fired to 04? I would think even if you could get a glaze to fit, this would be pretty fragile and very porous.
Min
@michelle page, if you have lowfire clay and want to use mid range glazes on them chances are it's not going to work. If you fire the lowfire clay to cone 5/6 it's very high odds that the clay will bloat and melt causing damage to your kiln. If you fire a midfire glaze to lowfire temps it's going to be very underfired and immature and won't look like it's supposed to or be as durable as it should be. For the most part you want to use lowfire glazes on lowfire clay and midrange glazes on midrange clay. Always best to fire some test tiles or test pots before committing "real" pots to a new glaze or technique. Welcome to the forum!
Chilly
No, you're likely to just get a puddle of clay, the height of the original thickness, and spread almost all the way across the shelf. Ask me how I know? I tried it, but with the safety net of a scrap piece of clay to catch the mess.
