Markp1964
I recently put new elements in my ancient Skutt 609. It has successfully fired loads to cone 6 twice-most recently on Monday. Tried to do another load Tuesday and the kiln barely got warm, even after three hours on high. No glow, the elements did "sing" when turned on but other than that no sign of real heat. Seems like new elements should still work well, could the issue be in the switch?
neilestrick
If they sing a little but don't really heat, I would check if one leg of the system is out, and they're only getting 120 volts instead of the full 240. Could be from the fuse box or the sitter or a switch. You'll need to use a multi-meter to check.
JohnnyK
What about the possibility of loose connections at the element terminals?
Bill Kielb
The 609 model appears to be a small 120v kiln with a kiln sitter. If I am reading that correctly and your elements are new, connected well and To the proper terminals then it is likely the three heat switch is defective. Lots of ifs there but if it is this small kiln and you are comfortable with checking voltage and current I would check that the elements are powered in all switch positions.
