jrgpots
I am building a 16 CF downdraft kiln using power burners. If I use two burner ports, each 3"x3" with a total area of 18 sq inch; would you make the chimney 3"x6" with an area 18 sq inch? Jed
neilestrick
How big are the burner tips (diameter)?
jrgpots
2"pipe with 2.5" tips. Jed
neilestrick
I'd go 3.5" wide on the burner ports. If you've got pilots hanging below the burners, I would go with a more rectangular shaped port so they're not blasting into the brick. In general, it's better to have the exit flue a little too big rather than too small, because you can always damper it down or stick a brick in it later if needed. What size bricks are you using? How are you spanning the flue opening?
jrgpots
The chimney flue will be changed to 4 x 8. The burner ports 4 x 4. The thickness of the chimney at the flue will be 8". The bricks are 4 x 4 x 11.5 inches. They are tongue and grooved. You can see the bricks on the following: http://community.ceramicartsdaily.org/topic/1307-help-me-identify-these-bricks/?do=findComment&comment=95139. Since the bricks are 11.5 so I can slide two bricks in and out to act as the damper. Jed
neilestrick
That sounds good to me. Again, you can always close everything down later if needed. Those are some crazy bricks. I do not envy you building with them!
jrgpots
The floor will be easy with the bricks laying sideways the tonge and grooves. But, the side walls will be "interesting.". I'll take pictures as I build. I will pour a 4' x 6' concrete pad after the new year. Jed
Mark C.
I would use a shelve as a damper not bricks. Mark
