i might has misunderstood what you were asking, i throw the pots first then I create the decorations to fit the piece I've thrown on the wheel. pot first, next day trim the bottom and then I threw a small form (fairly dry) for the body of the octopus, next I pulled 10 handles and attached the 8 i liked best to the small octopus form and carefully begin attaching to the pot starting with the body first then one leg at a time as i feel looks fluid and life like.

Hi Mark, I got the idea for the vessel and overall form after seeing a picture of the ring in process as a rough carving and finally got around to throwing it just after a friend dropped off the jade carving from China. I haven't done a lot of this type of work so its always a struggle taking the first steps until i get into a project a feel things flow the way I'm looking for. I'll post a photo of the ring on the main form, I don't know how to add it here.

this is made from Laguna soldate 60, thrown very thin and then the figural decorations were pressed out from the inside and carved on the outside for the detail, with porcelain slip and underglaze decoration. unfortunately, some of this was a little new for me, my electric kiln elements needed replacing and I made a few mistakes in the firing and lost some of the detail after spending months applying underglaze with a tiny brush, but oh well... the journey was fun.© 1515art

my wife was showing some new and very special jade rings she designed at our studio. these rings are carved by a number of very well known artists across (she is also doing a book on the carvings) China and a jade collector friend at the show asked if i would make him something with a rhinoceros on. I was working in my studio one night last week throwing a oblong tiny neck closed form with about 81/2 lbs of solvate 60. while collaring i accidentally got a little thin and ripped off about 3" of the top, so I changed directions and the pot morphed into the vessel my friend wanted. a lot of my work is done in a similar fashion, i'll pick a lump of clay and see where it takes me, many times something I've planned in the back of my head will just evolve.© 1515art

a jade ring carved for my wife by a friend in China was the inspiration. the clay is Laguna Soldate 60, thrown vessel with thrown and altered form with pulled clay appendages.© 1515art

This work was inspired by a visit from some friends from China, They are two of the top jade carvers from the City of Suzhou, China. I was going to have them sign the wall of my studio to mark their visit but did not have the wall ready, so i decided to throw these two forms and then have them carve the outside instead. they did this carving on the outside and writing around the back for me, it took them around 30 minutes once everything got going. a little bit about the work, these were quickly thrown using roughly 7 or 8 lbs of clay for each piece. the clay is Laguna Soldate 60, I threw 4 cylinders and immediately joined and altered the forms to make both vessels. these were done rough and dirty with no trimming, they stand roughly 18" tall and I've been testing a simple black iron celadon glaze formula from John Britt's book on cone 10 high fire glazes for the surface© 1515art
