  1. Fired a class load last week. Had a larger student sculpture that had been drying for weeks. Had a slow bisque fire program. Everything was going well, until the kiln got around 1000 F. Felt steam coming out of the peep... It was like the engine room scene from Titanic. FULL STOP!!!

  2. Firing our mural today and we'll install it at the SiO2 Ceramics Supply company outside Barcelona. we'll be firing Obvara and Milk firing at the same time we install the mural. SO far a fabulous clay experience. WE have 272 years experience collectively.

      272 years/11 potters . . . just a bunch of rookies. :) Looking forward to pictures.

Just back from H'ville; only clay I brought back is red and on bottom of shoes. Maybe next trip I'll go for quantity.

  4. This semester I'm starting the transition from Cone 10 reduction to Cone 6...is that like moving to "the dark side"? :)

Mark ... some say they have gone to ^6 to save fuel and be more "green". Others say the cost of ^6 glazes is higher than ^10, so its a wash. Who knows.

  5. Shelly M I have two earthenware pieces already glazed and fired to ^05 that turned out poorly. I want to reglaze and refire them (^05) but don't have any other low fire pieces to put in the kiln. Can I put these two pieces in with my BISQUE fire load of cone 5-6 pieces and fire them to ^05 along with my bisque? Or will the speed (slow) of the bisque fire and the organic matter that burns out of the clay affect the low fire glaze?

Pictures are being taken; too tired at night to upload. Kiln hard bricks literally weigh a ton. Did a lot of dry fitting with arch yesterday, warm up for the real event. Challenge on this one was building kiln to fit existing chimney -- although we increase flue size to match burners. Love hydraulic jacks. On to day 3.

Good progress day 1. Floor and walls up to first soldier course in place. Burner ports and flue done to right sizes/raios. on to day 2.

  8. Was doing a forum search on rare eath oxides such as Yttrium, Holium, and Samarium: wonder why these never came up in topics before?

Probably a couple on the forum would be familiar. Cost is a factor -- Holmium goes $125/lb; most choke at cobalt at $30/lb. Commercial "shinos" and other take offs allow you to get the look without the fuss of experimenting.

More like clay inaction. Have a major salt firing in April (1/3 of kiln); making wares like bat out of hell.

  19. I have to re-throw a series of spoon rests for a housing development this morning. I threw them in white stoneware, turned my head to look at this mug on the shelf. It was the mug the customer pointed at for glaze selection. How did I get that irony green rim? Duh! Hazelnut brown clay... 24 hazelnut brown spoon rests coming up!

The avatar/profile picture function is sort of broken. Members have been successful by first uploading the image to the gallery and then finding the options drop down menu and selecting 'set as photo'.
