jammy43
wondering what everyone is doing to compensate for the shortage of Gerstley Borate? I've notice that it is one of the main ingredients in most glaze recipes. I'm just building up my studio and really don't want to become dependent on any material which may be in short supply. Even now my supplier list GB as dependent upon availability. oh I fire to Cone
Mark C.
Laguna clay still has a huge supply so there is no shortage yet-Just find a Laguna supplier and buy a 2-3 bags. Then when its gone you have some. Mark
neilestrick
Yep. Laguna has a bunch. But if you prefer a substitute, I'm a big fan of Gillespie Borate.
dhPotter
Goto this website. Warning! You will be consumed by all of the information and the many links to other pages. http://www.digitalfire.com/gerstleyborate/boraq.html I have been changing all of my recipes with GB to Boraq. Have been pleased with the results and that was using Boraq 1. Have yet to test using Boraq 2. Good Luck with your discovery!
Marcia Selsor
I have used Gillespie Borate and liked it. I still have enough Gertsley Borate for a while. Marcia

Not sure where you live ? Mark Lol Thanks Mark. I would love to take you up on your offer. Unfortunately I am on an island in the middle of the Atlantic (Newfoundland Canada) and not close to anyone! Thanks for all the responses, I will start with Gillespie Borate and modify recipes for that. Appreciate the Help!
neilestrick
I have found that Gillespie is slightly stronger than Gerstley, so you may have to reduce the amount by 2-3%. Test, test, test....
