Treating Rust On Kiln Lid

I have a small amount of rust on the outer edge of the vent hole in my kiln lid. Some tiny flakes fell into the kiln & on to a white pot on the top shelf in the last firing - spoiling the pot. Does anyone know if Hammerite would be ok for treating this? Not sure if available outside the UK, but it can be painted directly on to rust once flakiness is brushed off. I've used it on the outer casing of my small electric kiln, but not sure if it can withstand the heat coming up through the vent hole. Does anyone know how hot this part is likely to get during firing? Is there a specialist product for this?

I think it would help if we could see a photo of what you are talking about here. In my own experience, it is easier to replace a lid on my kiln than to try to fix problems with pieces falling into the kiln. Are the fire brick in good shape, is this a ring guarding/protecting the vent hole? Picture might help.

Treat the rust whit a product that changes it (here its called ospho?)

then paint with high heat aluminum paint.

Bricks etc are all in good condition. It is the edge of the hole cut in the lid for the bung. See photos. Looking at it, myself, it's more exterior than interior so I'm thinking the rust killing paint Hammerite will do the job.

Celia, I've used that stuff on the metalwork around my kiln, but my lid is bricks with no metal on top only round the sides.  Is there a max temp marked on the tin?  Contact Hammerite and ask, is my best suggestion, second best is try it and see.
