sweetmelissa
I've been looking to buy a kiln, and keeping my eye on craigslist for either a Skutt or L&L around 5 cu.ft. This weekend, a 20 year old Skutt KM-1018 for $400 popped up. Since I've never owned a kiln before, I'm turning to this great forum to get some feedback as to whether this would be a good purchase. Chris Campbell
Both my Skutts are over 20 years old and still doing fine with basic maintenance. This sounds like a good deal ... Go see it.
bciskepottery
There are a number of threads on advice for buying used kilns; go to the main forum page and search for "buying used kilns". Here is one to start you off: http://community.ceramicartsdaily.org/topic/12469-what-to-look-for-in-a-used-kiln/?hl=%2Bbuying+%2Bused+%2Bkiln&do=findComment&comment=90961 When you search on the site, use the main page -- that will search all the forums. If you search while in a forum, all you get are results from that section.
neilestrick
The age of the kiln doesn't matter. I've seen pristine 25 year old kilns and destroyed 3 year old kilns. Condition is what matters. Take a look at it. For $400 with a controller it's worth it even if it needs minor repairs.
