CLN studios
Im making porcelain vessels, with lids, just small sugar jars, ^5 frost porcelain. Can you fire the lid in the jar, without it welding together? Im not glazing the gallery or the bottom of the lid. I dont use wax resist but I do have kiln shelf wash, could you use that to prevent it from sticking?
Mark C.
I use a wax sponge dipped in alumina hydrate as porcelain fuzes to each other.I dip the songe in wax ring out then dip in a bowl of hydrate and wax my honey/sugar pots lids and galleries I do not fire to cone 5 but to 10-11. If your Kiln wash is a commercial mix it has other ingredients in it which are an unknown.I woul not use it The idea is alumina comes right off as a powder where as kiln wash sticks and may not come off. You need something to hold the hydrate in place-thats what the wax does. My guess is frost will fuze to itself left alone. Mark
Marcia Selsor
Ditto I actually mix alumina in with a separate jar and brush it on. My wax washes out of brushes. I also use that on the foot to avoid any clinging to the shelf or kiln wash. I use Frost too. Marcia
Biglou13
I learned the alumina plus wax trick here. Now people think I'm smart..... Never thought of it as an anti plucker.... Had another teacher put a few strips of newsprint between.... Not sure why.
