DirtRoads
Has anyone used something like this? http://www.cooltools.us/Fiber-Blanket-p/kln-806.htm Do these work for beads? Someone mentioned putting a kiln blanket on top of a kiln to make up for cracks? I've googled and read but I can't find any pictures on this. I bought this used kiln once that had this white thing on the bottom (not inside the kiln) A 4-5 inch fiberglass looking piece. Is this a kiln blanket? I would like to know how to put a blanket on top of a kiln.
JLowes
I didn't see a temperature rating, but the description sounded odd for a product made to fire clay beads. I was reading the reviews and noticed that it is for polymer metal clay. Wrong kind of clay, the blanket is for precious metal clay. That's the trouble with calling things clay that are not silica based clay; too easy to misunderstand for the less experienced. It looks like the PMC fires to 1,650 F. Some earth clay products also fire to 1,650 F. somewhere around Cone 010, but typically earth clay fires higher than that. If you were to glaze and fire beads using the blanket I believe you might end up melting the blanket and beads together. John
Min
Fiberfrax or Fiberfax is a silica & alumina material that comes in different densities as a blanket or in a more rigid board. It comes in different heat ratings up to 2600 I believe. It's not something you want to handle often as it's a class 2 carcinogen. It's often used between the kiln bricks and the metal jacket of electric kilns where there is less chance of the fibers getting airborne. It's also used inside raku kilns. There is a rigidizer you can brush or spray onto it to help keep the airborne fibers down. I wouldn't use it on the top of a kiln where you are lifting it on and off for every firing. msds for one brand is here: http://www.fiberfrax.com/files/Fiberfrax-AZS-Products-MSDS-M0114.pdf
Crusty
Cerablanket is another option- 2400F top end - rigidizer = colloidal silica a respirator,, either a half face or full face is a great idea when using any blanket.. you do not want to inhale the fibers...
