Liat Avital
I live in Costa Rica and opened a pottery studio here. I struggle really with the commercial glazes I shipped from the usa. Obviously im the shipping is too expensive and I am trying to make my own glazes now. The clay we use is local red clay and most of the glazes looks very dark on it. I need help in figuring out a good recipe for a red clay body glazes that will fit the clay. i look forward to hearing from you, cheers, Liat
Hulk
Hi Liat, Welcome to the Forum! What cone are you glaze firing to? Can you post pictures of the fired clay?
Dick White
There is no good clear glaze recipe for red clay; they all will turn the clay dark. The issue is that calcium in the glaze reacts with the iron in the red clay turning it brown. Calcium is a necessary component of a durable glaze.
