mireia casanovas
Hello all, I am concerned about alternating firings of low/mid temperature non food safe glazes (with toxic materials) and high fire food safe glazings: I have just read (maybe it was obvious but I was not aware of it) that the toxic material can stay in the kiln bricks and be transfered to food safe glazes in posterior firings. Luckily I have not fired anything yet after these low glaze firings but I am quite concerned, what is your experience in this? Thank you so much for your inputs, Mireia
Hulk
Hi Mereia, Welcome to the Forum! Good question. What toxic materials are at issue?
Piedmont Pottery
This definitely happens with lead glazes. Lead is very volatile at glaze temperatures and will bind to the kiln brick, and then a portion of it will re-volatilize on subsequent firings and will bind to everything in the kiln. For other potentially toxic metals the extent to which this can happen is dependent on the volatility of the metal at firing temperature.
