Onward
Why did my Pikes Purple come out green? The mix was spot on, but the sp gr was a paltry 139, instead of the recommended 160. This wouldn’t be the cause, would it?
Min
Hi and welcome to the forum. Could you post the recipe as there are a couple versions of it. I believe cobalt greens need some titania (either from rutile or titanium dioxide) plus sodium (did you use a soda feldspar or nepheline syenite?) and are thickness sensitive. Easiest way to see if the sg was too low would be to let some of the water evaporate off and try it again, try the higher sg and a few test tiles with 1, 2 and 3 layers. Dick White
Pike's Purple is a cobalt/magnesium combination. Cobalt and titanium will come out green. There is no titanium in the usual Pike's Purple recipe. Are you certain you mixed it correctly?
Onward
Hi n thanks. I’m confident I mixed it correctly, ha, but in the end I am going to make up another test batch to rule out any possibilities. I got the recipe from Britt’s book, under magnesium matte purples. Babs
Check out Jkhn Britts video on spotted purples using Ashley'sBest. Specific firing schedules required, and thickness to achieve the purple
