Danny
Hello my partner has bought me a small electric muffle kiln for Christmas, I've never fired in a kiln before so was wondering if anyone has used one! I've given the kiln a go afew times and my work seems to bisque fire has it should, my firing schedule is 15 start temp -3hrs the reach 600- 1r30mins to reach 1060 and 1hr 30 mins to go back down (it usually takes about 3hrs to go right down) Any help or advice on these kilns would be very helpful, I bought cone 6 pyrometric cones and put them in with the bisque firing and they didn't move and realized I need lower cone. Hulk
Hi Danny! Looks like a cone 6 kiln http://www.technicalsupermarket.com/RH-16L KILN INSTRUCTION MANUAL.pdf 1060C, that's cone 04, hence the clay is mid fire - matures at cone 5/6? Depending on the clay, you might go a bit slower; there are several threads here on bisque and glaze schedules. In short, bisque often slower; at first, to drive off moisture, and later, to drive off organics and other stuff that burns away. Here are a few: Red clay https://community.ceramicartsdaily.org/topic/22103-red-body-clay-guide General https://community.ceramicartsdaily.org/topic/20226-firing-schedule-variables https://ceramicartsnetwork.org/daily/firing-techniques/electric-kiln-firing/bisque-firing-schedule-help-prevent-glaze-faults/ One (of many!) tips I picked up reading here - look for a kiln rated several cones over your target; as the elements wear out, the kiln will struggle to reach peak temp. My (antique) kiln, for example, is rated cone 10, however, I work at cone 5/6, hence (in theory), I should get many more firings before element replacement, over a cone 6 rated kiln... Danny
Thank you so much for your reply! Just going to figure out how to program a bisque firing schedule and a glaze 6 firing schedule with some test pots
Byzantia
Hey I just got this kiln and trying to bisque fire at 1000c then glaze fire slightly higher around 1200c Did you work out a good schedule for it ? DId you include soak times for bisque firing etc ? Would love some tips as total novice within firing and a bit scared of the whole control pannel - also found the tech support people couldn't really advise much?
