Momo
I would like to re-glaze the inside of some smoke-fired pieces so they can be used for food/drink. To what temperature can I fire without losing the smokey detail? Thank you in advance.
Denice
I think you will lose most of the smoke finish no matter what temperature you refire at if our firing in a electric kiln. I had some pots in a pit firing in college as part of a research project, The archeologist ended the firing way too soon so none of the pots were even close to being fired. There were nice and smoky but delicate to the touch, I refired them at C04 and lost most of the smoke. Denice
JohnnyK
Fugettaboutit...Re-firing to a temp that will melt any liner glaze will burn off the smoky carbon look. I had done a saggar firing in a Raku class and didn't like the overall look of the pot so I re-bisqued it and all of the effects disappeared, allowing me to start all over with a new effect. neilestrick
The 'smoke' is carbon that is trapped in the clay. Re-firing just burns it away.
