elenab
Hello, I would love to start working with porcelain. I found a used kiln which has highest temperature 2300F. Is it enough for firing porcelain? I do understand that different types of porcelain require different temperature. I hope that this kiln will be suited for all of them? bciskepottery
That kiln is probably rated for cone 8, which means cone 6 (approx. 2232F) is your best firing temperature. You can find cone 6 porcelains from most clay makers. A cone 10 porcelain will not vitrify in that kiln. A multi range cone 6 to 10 porcelain will probably not vitrify either. neilestrick
Cone 10 kilns are listed as 2350F, so cone 8/9 is probably it for your kiln. It should work fine for cone 6, which is all the hotter you would ever really want to fire in an electric kiln anyway. There are many fine cone 6 porcelain bodies out there. I use Standard 365 and I love it, but try out whatever your local clay supplier has.
Marcia Selsor
in the long run, ^6 is easier on the kiln and elements and uses a significantly less amount of electricity. Marcia
elenab
Thank you for all your replies! I finally bought a used Paragon kiln with highest temperature 2300 F. I am looking forward to work with it... but I have another question now. If this kiln is for cone 6, that what kilns are used for cone 10? the max temperature of the kilns I saw was 2380/2350 F. and can I use my kiln for cone 8? thanks
