  1. I spent my happy Saturday carving, slip casting, and doing mishima on some little stacking prep bowls. Not enough hours in the day for me, so I ended up putting half my things back into their bins to stay damp for another day.

  2. On my way out of the studio tonight I suddenly had a brilliant idea of a way to move things around, have more storage AND more floor space! I measured and everything would fit so of course I started heaving around filing cabinets and bookcases at 12 am. I neglected to move my shelf of drying pottery first and with a huge crash something fell straight on the top shelf, breaking a mug I can make again and a dinosaur piggy bank for my son that has taken me hours to make. :( :(

and one for whatever. They're also about 12 inches deep and I can actually keep them in front of my wall shelves and just swing them out (carefully) like a huge door when I need to get at something stored on the wall shelves (I will only store things I don't use very often). Plus I can move them to wherever I'm working or loading the kiln.

I know you cannot ever have too much storage and especially in a pottery studio you MUST have empty shelves for your current work.

I have crashed several pieces moving shelves around. They were usually out of view and had been sitting around for a while. I figured they will come out better the next time.

  3. Busily photographing 75 items so I can list them online. It's hard to resist the deep pull to make more new work especially now that I can handle the finished pieces and see each thing I want to change. I'll post more works-in-progress and also pictures of my finished pieces today and tomorrow.

I use Picasa 3 which is a free download from Google. I really like it. All I use is lightness, shadow, and occasionally straighten or crop. I did about 50 photos in 15 minutes last night.

That being said I DID do wedding photography years ago which involved viewing and editing 1,000-2,000 photos per event so anything compared to THAT is a piece of cake.

Not listing my work is my biggest weakness. I just hate taking pictures and writing up descriptions.

I love doing the photos, HATE listing the items. What is your Etsy shop, Rebekah? I'm thinking I've visited before.

  4. Today we unloaded a huge glaze kiln containing three months' work. Some of the pieces are better than I thought ... but the kiln overfired on the lower shelves and caused pits and blisters. Will regroup tomorrow when I'm less upset and figure out what's salvageable.

I had a talk with my one friend who is an experienced potter and her advice matches yours exactly. At this point it's an unusable item so I'm not risking anything. Really I had lots of good results and lots of items that came out beautifully and this is only my third kiln load ever. I'm just being a perfectionist.

Wow. 3rd load with successful pots is fantastic. Congratulations. Im on my like 50th firing and I still toss away 99% of everything.

Oh my word I would die. I'm using commercial glazes so I'm sure that makes a difference. This load I would say 1/2 were wonderful, no flaws, the othe 1/2 had tiny flaws mostly and a few were really messed up. The kiln we used is huge, its so big I have to stand on a 2 ft stepladder and bend upside down to load the bottom shelf.I fired around 75 items. I'll post photos tomorrow.

  5. Working madly on glazing two loads of bisque. I'm starting to really regret all the plans I had for iron oxide because it's a pain to work with!!

I'm glazing them today, going to try an oxide rub to show detail. One is going to be black-and-white spotted for sure. :)
