  1. Today we unloaded a huge glaze kiln containing three months' work. Some of the pieces are better than I thought ... but the kiln overfired on the lower shelves and caused pits and blisters. Will regroup tomorrow when I'm less upset and figure out what's salvageable.

I had a talk with my one friend who is an experienced potter and her advice matches yours exactly. At this point it's an unusable item so I'm not risking anything. Really I had lots of good results and lots of items that came out beautifully and this is only my third kiln load ever. I'm just being a perfectionist.

Wow. 3rd load with successful pots is fantastic. Congratulations. Im on my like 50th firing and I still toss away 99% of everything.

Oh my word I would die. I'm using commercial glazes so I'm sure that makes a difference. This load I would say 1/2 were wonderful, no flaws, the othe 1/2 had tiny flaws mostly and a few were really messed up. The kiln we used is huge, its so big I have to stand on a 2 ft stepladder and bend upside down to load the bottom shelf.I fired around 75 items. I'll post photos tomorrow.

  2. Unloaded a huge (for me) 45-piece bisque load that was all my own work. I'm so excited and inspired to make more things that glazing these first will take self-discipline. I'm definitely a mud potter!

Those obvara pots you posted were poetry in pots. I wish I could afford to buy one so bad!! ♥♥♥ I think my hugest bisque load was seventy-one pieces back in college. I took up the huge oval Skutt & a round, haha! That was HELL to glaze!

Yeahhhh I'm neck deep in glazing right now. *sigh* Not my favorite part but I'm excited to see finished results. This load would have been more pieces but I had several large (for me, 4# is large) pots and bowls that took up more room.

Btw, you must be thinking of someone else because I've never tried obvara. Yet! ;)

  3. Weekend One of the tour was so much fun! I'm not even tired although my feet hurt. I feel like I had friends over all weekend (which for me is heaven). Already inspired for new work and feeling a little silly for my pre-show jitters Friday night.

That's wonderful. Glad you enjoyed yourself. May you have many more days like this.

  4. What happens when you work like a maniac and then go on a trip for a week and eat junk food and don't get enough sleep? A week of forced vacation while you have a bug, that's what. -.- Itching to get back to work.

I learned to avoid this a while ago. Now when my wife takes off say 5 days from work. We schedule a 3 day vacation and rest 2 days at home after the 3 day beach trip. The go go go of vacation can wear you out. Particularly with kids! Hope you get feeling better@!

Yes, absolutely! I am much better, still just have a small lingering cough. -.- Back out in the studio today. I did not rush it as it never works anyway and the stress actually lengthens the amount of time I'm sick. There is NO POINT in trying to be out there when I'm shaky and sick.

We took a eight day vacation to Arizona this year. It was a relaxing trip but still had 2 days of rest when we got home.

  5. Working madly on glazing two loads of bisque. I'm starting to really regret all the plans I had for iron oxide because it's a pain to work with!!

I'm glazing them today, going to try an oxide rub to show detail. One is going to be black-and-white spotted for sure. :)
