  2. last week I went online to order a pottery book. After ordering Kilns, by Rhodes, Backyard Kilns, and Ceramics-Mastering the Craft, did I realize I forgot to order the intended book! One thing can be said about forgetfulness, it gets better with time! :)

You will know when you get older by forgetting what you just remembered what you forgot the first time.

If the vertical cracks bother you, try adding a coil of clay with 37% quartz sand wedged in to it. If that doesn't work or change the direction of the cracks, add 42% sand by volumn to the entire unit of clay. Then respond to the results to make any corrections. Just saying!

  10. If you can post a picture of the vessel you purchased. Maybe someone in our group can rightly identify it!!!
  11. Yes, at this point it still greenware until most of the sticks catch fire...then if you listen the vessel starts to make pinging sounds, so when a vessel pings and there isn't cracks on the finished product I assume its crossing over to ceramics. There are more photos in my gallery. Thanks, Alabama

  13. From the album: pit fire

No need to add sticks! Adding sticks is like trying to teach a pig how to sing, it doesn't change anything and annoys the pig!!

  14. From the album: pit fire

When the wood burns away, the pot is finished!
  15. It rained all night but I still have to fire one vessel. This is why I have sticks bagged up year round.

  16. From the album: pit fire

Clay beads ready to fire plus the arrowhead I found on the way. Its a mid archaic atlatl blank, not finished, and was made about 1000-1500 years before pottery in the USA. Beads are untempered and were made with a bamboo skewer. Beads have twice the moisture content of pottery!
  17. last night I made clay beads from the new clay vein. I will fire them to test how they hold up when pinched. Will try to post a picture tomorrow.

  18. From the album: pit fire

I had to go back to the Jordan Dam landing to get more clay. The last time I mixed not so good clay with good clay, and this time I only wanted all good clay. I normally soak the clay for 20 minutes, then allow it to age...for another 20 minutes before adding sand, and start making pottery. This clay is dry and is hard as a rock, if the clay is soft/wet, it will appear like Gray Crisco!!! All new clay sources are tested first by making clay beads and pinched when dry and after they're fired. They shouldn't crush easily. Pottery can be fired between the first day they are made and whenever! . Oh, on my way there I stopped to pick up a rock, and turned out to be a quartz spear point. I thought it was Paleo but when I took it by the archaeologist's house on my way home, it turned out to be a mid-archaic atlatl point. only 5000 to 6000 yrs old. See ya, Alabà mÃ
  19. an archaeologist friend of mine is currently working on the relocation of southeastern Indian tribes based on cerarefevidence. After the collapse of the chiefdom societies the tribes dispersed in all directions leaving a trail of ceramic debris. The timeline is from 1050 to 1700 CE!

Having grown up in Middle GA, I'd love to see how his research turns out.

  20. From the album: pit fire

Coil built, Shell tempered, burnished, pit fired, post fired engraved. Typical 15th century Mississippian Culture pottery. Pre-fired engraved on greenware is much, much easier...happen to have a senior moment at the time! Oh, my pit fire crew is Heidi Boxer and Kelli Stray dog. Heidi is going on 13. The mussel shells were burnt, then crushed, then added to the river clay.

  21. Made the trip down Rapids Road to the clay source today.. Seems to be a primary source judging from the density of the clay and lack of roots and pebbles..

  22. From the album: pit fire

Coosa river clay vein at Jordan Dam Landing. The Baretta M9 15 case is for scale. The vein is exposed is about 5 feet thick and 25 feet long, which could be a lifetime supply. About 20 pounds were collected and should be processed and bowls made tomorrow. Since I'm off work Friday, I'll try firing then to see if the clay is worth using! See ya, Alabama

  23. waiting for river to go down to further check out the latest clay source. will have to find out if it a primary or secondary vein. Next Saturday should be ok. :)

  24. From the album: styles

Cup on left is 1550 Belgium copy. Middle cup is 1680 Netherland. Pitcher on right, is 1725 French, with extended base, incised rim(before pulling spout) and long round handle, tall neck, and short round body. Pitcher should be green, but after a "walk on the wild side", glazed it in brown. This type can be seen in 1735 Chardin paintings and are usually white or green.
